Abstract

Growth of a distributed communication system is facilitated through dynamic addition of routing elements. A new routing element may be added to a network of routing elements by first establishing a connection between the new routing element and an existing routing element in the network. The connection may be either wireless or wireline. At least one address is assigned to the new routing element. Each assigned address comes from a pool of addresses maintained at the existing routing element. At least one pool of addresses is issued to the new routing element, permitting the new routing element to dynamically add yet another new routing element to the network of routing elements.

Claims (47)

1. A method of adding a new distribution point to a network of distribution points, the method comprising:

maintaining, with a first existing distribution point, a pool of network addresses;

establishing connections between a new distribution point and a plurality of existing distribution points, the plurality of existing distribution points comprising the first existing distribution point;

assigning, with the first existing distribution point, a network address, from the pool of network addresses, to the new distribution point;

providing the new distribution point with a second pool of network addresses to assign to clients of the new distribution point; and

forming a peer-to-peer relationship between the new distribution point and two or more of the plurality of existing distribution points.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the new distribution point comprises an IP/ATM switch.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the new distribution point comprises a wireless routing element.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the wireless routing element comprises an access point.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the new distribution point is a routing element in a CDMA or TDMA network.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the peer-to-peer relationship governs exchanges of IP packets carrying data.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing the new distribution point with a listing indicating one or more existing distribution point information packets should be forwarded, based on quality of service.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a data packet at the new distribution point;

determining, at the new distribution point and without the use of a central switch, to which of the plurality of existing distribution points the data packet should be routed; and

routing the data packet to the determined existing distribution point.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

removing the new distribution from the network of distribution points; and

releasing the network address assigned to the new distribution point; and

releasing the second pool of addresses provided to the new distribution point.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

transmitting a signature signal from the new distribution point when the new distribution point inserted into the network of distribution points.

11. A distributed communication system, comprising:

a network of existing distribution points for routing information packets based on destination addresses, the network of distribution points comprising an existing distribution point that maintains a pool of network addresses; and

a new distribution point to be added to the network of distribution points, the new distribution point being configured to:

establish a connection with a plurality of existing distribution points in the network of distribution points,

receive a network address, from the pool of network addresses, to be used to address the new distribution point;

receive a second pool of network addresses to assign to clients of the new distribution point;

distribute one or more of addresses from the second pool of network addresses to clients; and

form a peer-to-peer relationship with two or more of the plurality of existing distribution points.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein the new distribution point comprises an IP/ATM switch.

13. The system of claim 8 , wherein the new distribution point comprises a wireless routing element.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the wireless routing element comprises an access point.

15. The system of claim 8 , wherein the new distribution point is a routing element in a CDMA or TDMA network.

16. The system of claim 8 , wherein the peer-to-peer relationship governs exchanges of IP packets carrying data.

17. The system of claim 8 , wherein the new distribution point is further configured to:

receive a listing indicating one or more existing distribution point information packets should be forwarded, based on quality of service.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the new distribution is further configured to:

receive a data packet at the new distribution point;

determine, at the new distribution point and without the use of a central switch, to which of the plurality of existing distribution points the data packet should be routed; and

route the data packet to the determined existing distribution point.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the new distribution point is further configured to:

be removed from the network of distribution points; and

release the network address assigned to the new distribution point; and

release the second pool of addresses provided to the new distribution point.

20. The system of claim 11 , wherein the new distribution point is further configured to:

transmit a signature signal when the new distribution point inserted into the network of distribution points.
