Abstract

Allocation of multiple training sequences transmitted in a MIMO timeslot from multiple transmit antenna elements is provided. For example, a method of generating signals in a MIMO timeslot, the method comprising: selecting a first training sequence; preparing a first data payload; generating a first signal including the prepared first data payload and the first training sequence; transmitting the first signal in a MIMO timeslot from a first antenna of a network element; selecting a second training sequence, wherein the second training sequence is different from first training sequence; preparing a second data payload; generating a second signal including the prepared second data payload and the second training sequence; and transmitting the second signal in the MIMO timeslot from a second antenna of the network element.

Claims (38)

1. A base station for communicating with a mobile terminal, the base station comprising:

a first antenna that transmits a first signal;

a second antenna that transmits a second signal, the first antenna and the second antenna provide a Multiple Input Multiple Output, MIMO, communications to the mobile terminal; and

a transmitter configured to

determine a first training sequence for the first antenna, the first training sequence being for use by the mobile terminal to estimate a channel via which the first signal is received,

prepare a first data payload,

generate the first signal including the prepared first data payload and the first training sequence,

transmit the first signal from the first antenna for reception by the mobile terminal,

determine a second training sequence for the second antenna, the second training sequence being for use by the mobile terminal to estimate a channel via which a second signal is received, wherein the second training sequence is different from the first training sequence,

prepare a second data payload,

generate the second signal including the prepared second data payload and the second training sequence, and

transmit the second signal, at a same time as the first signal, from the second antenna.

2. The base station as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the first and second training sequences form one of a pre-amble, a mid-amble or a post-amble of the first and second signals respectively before the payload data.

3. The base station as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the first payload data is the same as the second payload data.

4. The base station of claim 1 , wherein the transmitter is configured to transmit a first indication of an association between the first training sequence and the first antenna.

5. The base station of claim 4 , wherein the transmitter is configured to transmit a second indication of an association between the second training sequence and the second antenna.

6. The base station of claim 4 , wherein the first indication is transmitted in a control channel message.

7. The base station of claim 1 , wherein the transmitter selects the first training sequence based on a total number of transmit antennas.

8. The base station of claim 1 , wherein the first and second signals are transmitted in accordance with Code Division Multiple Access.

9. The base station as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the first and second training sequences form a mid-amble of the first and second signals respectively before the payload data.

10. The base station as claimed in claim 1 , wherein

the transmitter is configured to transmit the first signal as a MIMO transmission from the first antenna,

the transmitter is configured to transmit the second signal as the MIMO transmission from the second antenna, and

the transmitter is configured to convolutionally encode the first data payload and the second data payload respectively, and puncture the convolutionally encoded first data payload and second data payload respectively, before the MIMO transmission.

11. A method of communicating from a base station to a mobile terminal, the base station including a first antenna for transmitting a first signal and a second antenna for transmitting a second signal for providing a Multiple Input Multiple Output, MIMO, communications to the mobile terminal, the method comprising:

transmitting the first and the second signals for reception by the mobile terminal by determining a first training sequence for the first antenna, the first training sequence being for use by the mobile terminal to estimate a channel via which a first burst is received;

preparing a first data payload;

generating the first signal including the prepared first data payload and the first training sequence;

transmitting the first signal from the first antenna;

determining a second training sequence for the second antenna, the second training sequence being for use by the mobile terminal to estimate a channel via which a second signal is received, wherein the second training sequence is different from the first training sequence;

preparing a second data payload;

generating the second signal including the prepared second data payload and the second training sequence; and

transmitting the second signal at the same time as the first signal from the second antenna.

12. The method as claimed in claim 11 , wherein the first and second training sequences form one of a pre-amble, a mid-amble or a post-amble of the first and second signals respectively before the payload data.

13. The method as claimed in claim 11 , wherein the first payload data is the same as the second payload data.

14. The method as claimed in claim 12 , further comprising transmitting a first indication of an association between the first training sequence and the first antenna.

15. The method as claimed in claim 14 , further comprising transmitting a second indication of an association between the second training sequence and the second antenna.

16. The method as claimed in claim 14 , wherein the transmitting the first indication includes signaling the first indication in a control channel message.
