Steerable dual filter cerebral protection system
View Patent ↗Single filter and multi-filter endolumenal methods and systems for filtering fluids within the body. In some embodiments a blood filtering system captures and removes particulates dislodged or generated during a surgical procedure and circulating in a patient's vasculature. In some embodiments a filter system protects the cerebral vasculature during a cardiac valve repair or replacement procedure.
1. A catheter for positioning a filter in the left common carotid artery, comprising:
an elongate, flexible catheter body, having a proximal end, a distal end and a guidewire lumen extending therethrough;
a compound deflection zone on the body, having a first section and a second section;
at least one pull wire extending between the deflection zone and the proximal end;
the deflection zone configured such that as the pull wire is retracted, the pull wire causes an off axis deflection of the first section in a first plane, and an off axis deflection of at least a portion of the second section in a second plane and wherein the off axis deflection of the second section caused by proximal retraction of the pull wire continues with proximal retraction of the pull wire after off axis deflection of the first section has stopped deflecting;
an elongate tubular body extending through the deflection zone;
a filter attached to the elongate tubular body; and
a flex zone on the tubular body positioned proximal of the filter.
2. The catheter as in claim 1 , wherein the first plane is different from the second plane.
3. The catheter as in claim 1 , wherein the deflection of the first section from a longitudinal axis of the catheter is at least about 15 degrees.
4. The catheter as in claim 1 , where in the deflection of the second section from a longitudinal axis of the catheter is at least about 90 degrees.
5. The catheter as in claim 4 , wherein the deflection of the second section from the longitudinal axis of the catheter is at least about 120 degrees.
6. The catheter as in claim 1 , wherein the distal end of the catheter is deflectable through an angle of at least about 150 degrees with respect to a longitudinal axis of the catheter in the absence of any deflection.
7. The catheter as in claim 1 , wherein the filter is distal of the deflection zone when deployed.
8. The catheter as in claim 1 , further comprising a second filter proximal of the deflection zone.
9. The catheter as in claim 1 , wherein the first section is proximal to the second section.
10. The catheter as in claim 1 , wherein the first section comprises slots formed in a tubular segment.
11. The catheter as in claim 10 , wherein the slots bottom out to stop off axis deflection of the first section.
12. The catheter as in claim 1 , wherein as the pull wire is proximally retracted the first section is articulated to a first curvature and then continued proximal retraction of the pull wire causes the second section to be articulated to a second curvature.
13. The catheter as in claim 12 , wherein the first curvature and the second curvature are in different directions.
14. The catheter as in claim 13 , wherein the first and second sections form first and second concave curves in different directions.
15. The catheter as in claim 1 , wherein retraction of the pull wire causes the first section to form a first concave curve in a first direction and the section to form a second concave curve in a second opposite direction.
