Abstract

A method for providing resource throttling management. The method includes accessing a distributed computer system having a plurality of nodes, initiating a new object policy object backup protection for a new object, and implementing a discovery process to determine computer environment components subject to stress. The method further includes generating a physical resource throttling protocol in accordance with the components subject to stress, and processing the new object in accordance with the object management policy and in accordance with the throttling protocol.

Claims (33)

1. A method for providing resource throttling management, comprising:

accessing a distributed computer system having a plurality of nodes;

providing a graphical user interface (GUI) to a user;

initiating, via the GUI, a new object backup protection policy for a new object using a resource throttling manager, wherein the new object comprises at least one virtual machine, wherein the resource throttling manager selects virtual machines for backup based on a logical combination of a plurality of attributes of the virtual machines defined by the user, wherein the GUI displays a list of more than one logical operator available to construct the new virtual machine backup protection policy, wherein the list of more than one logical operator comprises a negation logical operator, and wherein the GUI allows a user to type the new object backup protection policy as a free-form query;

implementing, via at least one computer processor, a virtual machine discovery process to discover the new virtual machine and determine computer data storage device components associated with the new virtual machine and subject to stress, wherein the resource throttling manager maintains a count for the resources associated with each of the determined data storage device components;

generating a physical resource throttling protocol in accordance with the determined data storage device components associated with the new virtual machine and subject to stress, wherein the throttling protocol prevents overuse of at least one of the determined data storage device components subject to stress by imposing limits on a number of virtual machine backup jobs that may run concurrently; and

processing the new virtual machine in accordance with the object backup protection policy and in accordance with the throttling protocol, wherein the processing includes scheduling the new virtual machine for backup after consulting a user controlled set of limits for a number of virtual machines associated with the determined data storage device components that may be simultaneously scheduled for backup based on the count for the resources associated with each of the determined data storage device components.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the new object comprises a virtual machine.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the new object comprises a plurality of virtual machines.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the data storage device components subject to stress comprises a disk array.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the physical resource throttling protocol is for limiting overuse of a disk array.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the physical resource throttling protocol includes thresholds that are user adjustable.

7. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium having stored thereon, computer executable instructions that, if executed by a computer system cause the computer system to perform a method for providing resource throttling, comprising:

accessing a distributed computer system having a plurality of nodes; providing a graphical user interface (GUI) to a user;

initiating, via the GUI, a new object backup protection policy for a new object using a resource throttling manager, wherein the new object comprises at least one virtual machine, wherein the resource throttling manager selects virtual machines for backup based on a logical combination of a plurality of attributes of the virtual machines defined by the user, wherein the GUI displays a list of more than one logical operator available to construct the new virtual machine backup protection policy, wherein the list of more than one logical operator comprises a negation logical operator, and wherein the GUI allows a user to type the new virtual machine backup protection policy as a free-form query;

implementing a virtual machine discovery process to discover the new virtual machine and determine computer data storage device components associated with the new virtual machine and subject to stress, wherein the resource throttling manager maintains a count for the resources associated with each of the determined data storage device components;

generating a physical resource throttling protocol in accordance with the components associated with the new virtual machine and subject to stress, wherein the throttling protocol prevents overuse of at least one of the determined data storage device components subject to stress by imposing limits on a number of virtual machine backup jobs that may run concurrently; and

processing the new virtual machine in accordance with the object backup protection policy and in accordance with the throttling protocol, wherein the processing includes scheduling the new object for backup after consulting a user controlled set of limits for a number of virtual machines associated with the determined data storage device components that may be simultaneously scheduled for backup based on the count for the resources associated with each of the determined data storage device components.

8. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 7 , wherein the new object comprises a virtual machine.

9. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 7 , wherein the new object comprises a plurality of virtual machines.

10. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 7 , wherein the data storage device components subject to stress comprises a disk array.

11. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein the physical resource throttling protocol is for limiting overuse of a disk array.

12. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 7 , wherein the physical resource throttling protocol includes thresholds that are user adjustable.

13. A server computer system, comprising: a computer system having a processor coupled to a computer readable storage media and executing computer readable code which causes the computer system to implement a resource throttling manager that functions by:

accessing a distributed computer system having a plurality of nodes; providing a graphical user interface (GUI) to a user;

initiating, via the GUI, a new object backup protection policy for a new object using a resource throttling manager, wherein the new object comprises at least one virtual machine, wherein the resource throttling manager selects virtual machines for backup based on a logical combination of a plurality of attributes of the virtual machines defined by the user, wherein the GUI displays a list of more than one logical operator available to construct the new virtual machine backup protection policy, wherein the list of more than one logical operator comprises a negation logical operator, and wherein the GUI allows a user to type the new virtual machine backup protection policy as a free-form query;

implementing a virtual machine discovery process to discover the new virtual machine and determine computer data storage device components associated with the new virtual machine and subject to stress, wherein the resource throttling manager maintains a count for the resources associated with each of the determined data storage device components;

generating a physical resource throttling protocol in accordance with the data storage device components associated with the new virtual machine and subject to stress, wherein the throttling protocol prevents overuse of at least one of the determined data storage device components subject to stress by imposing limits on a number of virtual machine backup jobs that may run concurrently; and

processing the new virtual machine in accordance with the object backup protection policy and in accordance with the throttling protocol, wherein the processing includes scheduling the new virtual machine for backup after consulting a user controlled set of limits for a number of virtual machines associated with the determined data storage device components that may be simultaneously scheduled for backup based on the count for the resources associated with each of the determined data storage device components.

14. The server computer system of claim 13 , wherein the new object comprises a virtual machine.

15. The server computer system of claim 13 , wherein the new object comprises a plurality of virtual machines.

16. The server computer system of claim 13 , wherein the data storage device components subject to stress comprises a disk array.

17. The server computer system of claim 13 , wherein the physical resource throttling protocol includes thresholds that are user adjustable.
