HANDSET STATES AND STATE DIAGRAMS: OPEN, CLOSED TRANSITIONAL AND EASEL
A multi-display device is adapted to turn on and off certain device functionality based on one or more of device state and triggers. These triggers include a transition trigger, an open trigger and a closed trigger. Furthermore, and based on one or more of these triggers and device state, the device can provide feedback to a user, such as visual feedback, audio feedback and vibration feedback to assist a user with determining when the device is changing state. The operation of the primary screen, secondary screen, system and feedback options are also described relative to the beginning and endpoint of the device transition. Furthermore, the trigger corresponding to a transitional trigger where primary and secondary screens have a certain angle orientation and the trigger corresponding to a trigger point where the primary and secondary screens have a second angle orientation relative to one another are described.
1 . A multi-screen user device comprising:
at least one position sensor that detects a position of a first screen relative to a second screen, the position sensor outputting a signal indicating the multi-screen device is in one of an open position, a closed position, a special state and a transitional position; and
a controller that controls one or more functions associated with one or more of the first screen and the second screen based on the signal.
2 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the signal indicates the multi-screen device is in the special state which is an easel state.
3 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the transitional position indicates the device is opening, closing or transitioning from a first state to a second state.
4 . The device of claim 3 , wherein the transitional position exists when there is a predefined angular relationship between the first screen and the second screen.
5 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the functions include one or more of the operation of a gesture capture area, a touch screen, a display, a configurable area, one or more buttons, one or more inputs, a screen, an accelerometer, an orientation detector and a feedback mechanism.
6 . The device of claim 5 , wherein the feedback mechanism includes one or more of a vibration generation device and an audio device.
7 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the signal is a trigger that is invoked when the two screens reach a relative position in relation to one another.
8 . The device of claim 1 , wherein in the closed position the first screen is back-to-back with the second screen.
9 . The device of claim 1 , wherein in the open position, the first and the second screen are planar or substantially planar.
10 . A multi-screen user device comprising:
means for detecting a position of a first screen relative to a second screen, the position sensor outputting a signal indicating the multi-screen device is in one of an open position, a closed position, a special state and a transitional position; and
means for controlling one or more functions associated with one or more of the first screen and the second screen based on the signal.
11 . A method for controlling a multi-screen user device comprising:
detecting a position of a first screen relative to a second screen;
outputting a signal indicating the multi-screen device is in one of an open position, a closed position, a special state and a transitional position; and
controlling one or more functions associated with one or more of the first screen and the second screen based on the signal.
12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the signal indicates the multi-screen device is in the special state which is an easel state.
13 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the transitional position indicates the device is opening, closing or transitioning from a first state to a second state.
14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the transitional position exists when there is a predefined angular relationship between the first screen and the second screen.
15 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the functions include one or more of the operation of a gesture capture area, a touch screen, a display, a configurable area, one or more buttons, one or more inputs, a screen, an accelerometer, an orientation detector and a feedback mechanism.
16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the feedback mechanism includes one or more of a vibration generation device and an audio device.
17 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the signal is a trigger that is invoked when the two screens reach a relative position in relation to one another.
18 . The method of claim 11 , wherein in the closed position the first screen is back-to-back with the second screen.
19 . The method of claim 11 , wherein in the open position, the first and the second screen are planar or substantially planar.
20 . A non-transitory computer readable information storage media having stored thereon instructions, that when executed by a processor, perform the steps in claim 11 .
