Abstract

A temperature sensor that has an elongated sensing element having a length of at least 10 m, measured at a temperature of 20° C. The elongated sensing element includes an elongated jacket and an optical fiber mounted in the jacket and having an EFL of at least 0.35%, wherein the elongated sensing element has an average temperature error of less than 2° C.

Claims (89)

1. A temperature sensor, comprising:

a) an elongated sensing element having a length of at least 10 m, measured at a temperature of 20° C., the elongated sensing element including:

i) an elongated jacket;

ii) an optical fiber mounted in the jacket and having an EFL of at least 0.35%;

b) the elongated sensing element having an average temperature error of less than 0.2° C.

2. A temperature sensor as defined in claim 1 , wherein the optical fiber has an EFL of at least 0.50%.

3. A temperature sensor as defined in claim 2 , wherein the optical fiber has an EFL of at least 0.70%.

4. A temperature sensor as defined in claim 1 , wherein the elongated sensing element has a length of not less than 100 m.

5. A temperature sensor as defined in claim 4 , wherein the elongated sensing element has a length of not less than 500 m.

6. A temperature sensor as defined in claim 5 , wherein the elongated sensing element has a length of not less than about 1 km.

7. A temperature sensor as defined in claim 1 , wherein the jacket is characterized by a CTE jacket , the optical fiber is characterized by a CTE fiber , and a ratio CTE jacket /CTE fiber has a value of at least about 1.0001.

8. A temperature sensor as defined in claim 7 , wherein the ratio CTE jacket /CTE fiber has a value of at least about 10.

9. A temperature sensor as defined in claim 8 , wherein the ratio CTE jacket /CTE fiber has a value of at least about 20.

10. A temperature measurement system, comprising:

a) an elongated sensing element having a length of at least 10 m, measured at a temperature of 20° C., the elongated sensing element including:

i) an elongated jacket;

ii) an optical fiber mounted in the jacket and having an EFL of at least 0.35%;

b) the elongated sensing element having an average temperature error of less than 0.2° C.;

c) the optical fiber defining an optical path for conveying an optical signal, the optical path manifesting an interaction with the optical signal, the interaction producing a measurable response, the response conveying information about temperature to which the optical fiber is exposed;

d) a measurement component coupled to the optical fiber to sense the response and for deriving from the response information on the temperature to which the optical fiber is exposed.

11. A temperature measurement system as defined in claim 1 , wherein the optical fiber has an EFL of at least 0.50%.

12. A temperature measurement system as defined in claim 11 , wherein the optical fiber has an EFL of at least 0.70%.

13. A temperature measurement system as defined in claim 10 , wherein the elongated sensing element has a length of not less than 100 m.

14. A temperature measurement system as defined in claim 13 , wherein the elongated sensing element has a length of not less than 500 m.

15. A temperature measurement system as defined in claim 14 , wherein the elongated sensing element has a length of not less than about 1 km.

16. A temperature measurement system as defined in claim 10 , wherein the jacket is characterized by a CTE jacket , the optical fiber is characterized by a CTE fiber , a ratio CTE jacket /CTE fiber has a value of at least about 1.0001.

17. A temperature measurement system as defined in claim 16 , wherein the ratio CTE jacket /CTE fiber has a value of at least about 10.

18. A temperature measurement system as defined in claim 17 , wherein the ratio CTE jacket /CTE fiber has a value of at least about 20.

19. A temperature measurement system as defined in claim 10 , wherein the measurement component is operative for deriving from the response information on the temperature to which the optical fiber is exposed at a plurality of spaced apart locations along the length of the sensing element.

20. A temperature measurement system as defined in claim 19 , wherein the optical fiber includes a plurality of spaced apart gratings having a temperature dependent response to optical interrogation.

21. A temperature measurement system as defined in claim 19 , wherein the interaction is a continuous interaction that occurs along the optical path, wherein the interaction produced back-scattering, the measurement component sensing the back-scattering.

22. A temperature sensor comprising:

a) an elongated sensing element having a length of at least 10 m, measured at a temperature of 20° C., the elongated sensing element including:

i) an elongated jacket having an internal cross-sectional area A j ;

ii) an optical fiber mounted in the jacket and having an excess fiber length EFL of at least 0.35%;

b) the elongated sensing element having a parameter

of at least about 6.25 mm 2 per percent of EFL.

23. A temperature sensor as defined in claim 22 , wherein the parameter S is at least about 10 mm 2 per percent of EFL.

24. A temperature sensor as defined in claim 22 , wherein the excess fiber length EFL is at least 0.50%.

25. A temperature sensor as defined in claim 24 , wherein the excess fiber length EFL is at least 0.70%.

26. A temperature sensor as defined in claim 22 , wherein the elongated sensing element has a length of not less than 100 m.

27. A temperature sensor as defined in claim 26 , wherein the elongated sensing element has a length of not less than 500 m.

28. A temperature sensor as defined in claim 27 , wherein the elongated sensing element has a length of not less than about 1 km.

29. A temperature sensor as defined in claim 22 , wherein the jacket is characterized by a CTE jacket , the optical fiber is characterized by a CTE fiber , and a ratio CTE jacket /CTE fiber has a value of at least about 1.0001.

30. A temperature sensor as defined in claim 29 , wherein the ratio CTE jacket /CTE fiber has a value of at least about 10.

31. A temperature sensor as defined in claim 30 , wherein the ratio CTE jacket /CTE fiber has a value of at least about 20.

32. A temperature sensor comprising an elongated sensing element, the elongated sensing element having a length of at least 10 m measured at a temperature of 20° C., the elongated sensing element having an average temperature error of less than 0.2° C. and including:

an elongated jacket having an internal cross-sectional area A j ; and

an optical fiber mounted in the jacket and having an excess fiber length EFL, a ratio

being at least about 1 mm 2 per percent of EFL, the optical fiber being responsive to at least one optical interrogation signal to produce at least one response allowing measurement of temperature to which the optical fiber is exposed at a plurality of locations spaced apart along a length of the elongated sensing element.

33. A temperature sensor as defined in claim 32 , wherein the excess fiber length EFL is at least 0.35%.

34. A temperature sensor as defined in claim 32 , wherein the excess fiber length EFL is at least 0.50%.

35. A temperature sensor as defined in claim 32 , wherein the excess fiber length EFL is at least 0.70%.

36. A temperature sensor as defined in claim 32 , wherein the length of the elongated sensing element is not less than 100 m.

37. A temperature sensor as defined in claim 32 , wherein the length of the elongated sensing element is not less than 500 m.

38. A temperature sensor as defined in claim 32 , wherein the length of the elongated sensing element is not less than 1 km.

39. A temperature sensor as defined in claim 32 , wherein the jacket has a coefficient of thermal expansion CTE jacket , the optical fiber has a coefficient of thermal expansion CTE fiber , and a ratio CTE jacket /CTE fiber is at least about 1.0001.

40. A temperature sensor as defined in claim 39 , wherein the ratio CTE jacket /CTE fiber is at least about 10.

41. A temperature sensor as defined in claim 39 , wherein the ratio CTE jacket /CTE fiber is at least about 20.

42. A temperature sensor as defined in claim 32 , wherein the optical fiber comprises a plurality of gratings spaced apart along the optical fiber, the at least one response being produced by the gratings.

43. A temperature sensor as defined in claim 32 , wherein the at least one response is scattered light.

44. A temperature measurement system comprising a temperature sensor as defined in claim 32 and a measurement unit, the measurement unit being coupled to the optical fiber of the temperature sensor, the measurement unit being configured to (i) sense the at least one response and (ii) derive, at least in part based on the at least one response, information about the temperature to which the optical fiber is exposed at the plurality of points spaced apart along the length of the elongated sensing element.

45. A temperature sensor, comprising an elongated sensing element, the elongated sensing element having a length of at least 10 m measured at a temperature of 20° C., the elongated sensing element having

an average temperature error of less than 1° C. and including:

an elongated jacket having an internal cross-sectional area A j ; and

A an optical fiber mounted in the jacket and having an excess fiber length EFL, a ratio

being at least about 1 mm 2 per percent of EFL, the optical fiber being responsive to at least
