Abstract

A method of repairing an inner vessel wall includes the step of inserting at least a portion of a microwave ablation device into a vessel. The microwave ablation device includes an inner conductor disposed within an outer conductor and defines a longitudinal axis. The method also includes the steps of inserting a repairing sealant into the vessel such that the repairing sealant is disposed between an inner vessel wall and the outer conductor and expanding at least a portion of the outer conductor relative to the longitudinal axis to force at least a portion of the repairing sealant into the inner vessel wall. The method also includes the step of delivering energy to at least one of the inner conductor and the outer conductor to activate the repairing sealant to repair the inner vessel wall.

Claims (14)

1. A microwave treatment system, comprising:

an electrosurgical energy source;

a microwave antenna assembly operatively connected to the electrosurgical energy source, the microwave antenna assembly including:

a radiating portion configured to deliver energy from the energy source to tissue, the radiating portion having an outer conductor and an inner conductor extending therethrough, the inner conductor defining a longitudinal axis and having a dielectric material disposed thereon, wherein one of the inner conductor or the outer conductor is movable relative to the other to cause at least a portion of the outer conductor to expand radially relative to the longitudinal axis.

2. A microwave treatment system according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the outer or inner conductors terminates in a distal tip configured to pierce tissue.

3. A microwave treatment system according to claim 2 , wherein the distal tip is insulative.

4. A microwave treatment system according to claim 1 , wherein the outer conductor includes a plurality of deployable conductors disposed at least partially along a length thereof and configured to expand radially relative to the longitudinal axis.

5. A microwave treatment system according to claim 4 , wherein the plurality of deployable conductors are configured to mechanically cut through tissue.

6. A microwave treatment system according to claim 4 , wherein the plurality of deployable conductors are configured to cut through tissue with the aid of energy from the power source.

7. A microwave treatment system according to claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the outer conductor is flexible.

8. A microwave treatment system according to claim 4 , wherein a distance between the plurality of deployable conductors and the inner conductor defines an ablation region when the plurality of deployable conductors are radially expanded relative to the longitudinal axis.

9. A microwave treatment system according to claim 8 , wherein the outer conductor and the inner conductor are configured to form an electromagnetic field within the ablation region.

10. A microwave treatment system according to claim 1 , wherein distal movement of the outer conductor relative to the inner conductor causes at least a portion of the outer conductor to expand radially relative to the longitudinal axis.

11. A microwave treatment system according to claim 1 , wherein proximal movement of the inner conductor relative to the outer conductor causes at least a portion of the outer conductor to expand radially relative to the longitudinal axis.
