Abstract

A mobile station connected to a wireless network can comprise a subscriber identity module. The subscriber identity module can maintain a list of networks. The list can comprise forbidden public land mobile network data. Software can manage the forbidden public land mobile network data. For example, an applet transmitted to the subscriber identity module can periodically delete entries from the list and/or reset the subscriber identity module on predefined time intervals or when specified events occur.

Claims (41)

1. A method, for a mobile station in a machine-to-machine (M2M) application to manage forbidden public land mobile network data maintained at a subscriber identity module (SIM) of the mobile station, the method comprising the steps of:

tracking time from within the subscriber identity module by counting periodic communications carrying location information;

determining if the tracked time has met a threshold; and

responsive to a determination that the tracked time has met the threshold, deleting the forbidden public land mobile network data maintained at the subscriber identity module:

wherein a JAVA applet executing on the subscriber identity module:

performs the tracking, determining, and deleting steps,

restores a forbidden public land mobile network data file to a predetermined state when the mobile station fails registration, and

comprises instructions for daily refreshing mobile equipment connected to the mobile station and the subscriber identity module, and

wherein a registration failure triggers the JAVA applet to reset the mobile equipment that is connected to the subscriber identity module.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mobile station is integrated as a communications link for an unmanned application involving at least one of telemetry, asset tracking, and device monitoring.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method comprises periodically deleting at least one entry on a list of forbidden public land mobile networks, wherein the list comprises the data file.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tracking step, the determining step, and the deleting step collectively comprise periodically deleting a list of forbidden public land mobile networks for the mobile station.

5. A method, for a mobile station to manage a forbidden public land mobile network data file stored at a subscriber identity module of the mobile station, comprising the steps of:

estimating time based on counting periodic communications carrying location information; and

in response to the estimated time meeting a threshold, automatically clearing an entry in the data file,

wherein a JAVA applet executing on the subscriber identity module performs the estimating step by tracking time from within the subscriber identity module,

wherein the JAVA applet executing on the subscriber identity module performs the automatically clearing step by:

determining if the tracked time has met a threshold; and

responsive to a determination that the tracked time has met the threshold, deleting forbidden public land mobile network data maintained at the subscriber identity module,

wherein the JAVA applet restores the forbidden public land mobile network data file to a predetermined state when the mobile station fails registration;

wherein the mobile station comprises mobile equipment connected to the subscriber identity module,

wherein the registration failure triggers a reset of the mobile equipment that is connected to the subscriber identity module, and

wherein the JAVA applet comprises instructions for refreshing the mobile equipment and the subscriber identity module on a predetermined time interval.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising receiving at the subscriber identity module software comprising instructions for:

estimating time based on counting periodic communications carrying location information; and

in response to the estimated time meeting a threshold, automatically clearing an entry in the data file.

7. The method of claim 5 , further comprising transmitting for receipt at the subscriber identity module software comprising instructions for:

estimating the time based on counting the periodic communications carrying location information; and

in response to the estimated time meeting the threshold, automatically clearing the entry in the data file.

8. A method for a JAVA applet to manage a forbidden public land mobile network data file comprising forbidden public land mobile network data stored in memory of a subscriber identity module of a mobile station, the method comprising transmitting the JAVA applet over a cellular network for receipt at the mobile station and automated loading on the subscriber identity module,

wherein the JAVA applet comprises instructions for:

tracking time from within the subscriber identity module by counting periodic communications transmitted over the cellular network that carry location information;

determining if the tracked time has met a threshold by determining when a predetermined number of communications have been counted;

responsive to a determination that the tracked time has met the threshold, deleting the forbidden public land mobile network data stored in memory of the subscriber identity module;

a registration failure to trigger the JAVA applet to reset mobile equipment that is connected to the subscriber identity module;

restoring the forbidden public land mobile network data file to a predetermined state when the mobile station fails registration; and

refreshing the mobile equipment at least daily.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein a communications link comprises the mobile station, and the communications link is part of an unmanned, machine-to-machine (M2M) application.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the JAVA applet comprises instructions for resetting the forbidden public land mobile network data file to a predetermined state responsive to the mobile station failing register within a predetermined amount of time.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein tracking time by counting periodic communications transmitted over the cellular network comprises estimating time.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the JAVA applet comprises instructions for refreshing the mobile station in response to the mobile station failing to register while the counted periodic communications increase to a second predetermined number.
