Abstract

A catheter assembly includes an elongated member having an ultrasonic beacon disposed adjacent to a distal end portion of the elongated member, a power supply releasably attachable adjacent to the proximal end of the elongated member, and a catheter. The distal end portion of the elongated member with the ultrasonic transmitter is inserted into an anatomical structure of the human body, and the ultrasonic transmitter is powered by the power supply. Using conventional medical ultrasonography equipment, a technician is able to observe and/or track on a display an image of the internal structure of the human body and an image such as an illuminated bright spot representing the energized ultrasonic beacon. After locating the elongated member, the power supply is removed, and the catheter is slid onto the elongated member to locate the catheter tip. Thereafter, the elongated member is removed.

Claims (16)

1. A method for positioning a catheter tip of a catheter within a human body, the method comprising:

obtaining an elongated member having a proximal end portion and a distal end portion, an ultrasonic beacon operably attached to said distal end portion of the elongated member, and a power supply releasably attachable to the proximal end portion of the elongated member and releasably electrically connectable to energize the ultrasonic beacon;

inserting the distal end portion of the elongated member with the ultrasonic beacon into an anatomical structure of the human body;

positioning an ultrasonic transmitter/receiver adjacent to the outer surface of the human body and to the ultrasonic beacon;

powering the ultrasonic beacon with the power supply;

observing on a display an ultrasound image of the internal structure of the human body and an image representing the energized ultrasonic beacon based on ultrasonic waves received by the ultrasound transmitter/receiver;

disconnecting the power supply from a proximal end portion of the elongated member;

inserting the catheter tip over the proximal end portion of elongated member;

positioning the catheter tip relative to the elongated member; and

removing the elongated member from the catheter.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the observing comprises tracking the observed image representing the energized ultrasonic beacon as the elongated member is positioned at a desired location.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising reconnecting the power supply to the proximal end portion of the elongated member, and confirming the location of the image representing the energized ultrasonic beacon on the display.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the observing comprises observing the image representing the energized ultrasonic beacon as an illuminated bright spot.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the powering the ultrasonic beacon with the power supply comprises attaching the power supply to the proximal end portion of the elongated member.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the positioning the catheter tip of the catheter relative to the elongated member comprises aligning marks on the elongated member with the catheter.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the positioning the catheter tip of the catheter relative to the elongated member comprises positioning the catheter tip just outside of a heart in a lower ⅓ of a superior vena cava.
