Abstract

A wireless communication system includes at least one first relay configured to forward data received from at least one of a plurality of base stations, and to reduce intra-cell interference between a plurality of sectors of the plurality of base stations.

Claims (44)

1. A wireless communication system, comprising:

at least one first relay configured to forward data received from at least one of a plurality of base stations, and to reduce intra-cell interference between a plurality of sectors of the plurality of base stations, the first relay being at a first 3-sector vertex between the plurality of base stations;

at least one second relay at a second 3-sector vertex including three of the plurality of sectors, and

at least one third relay on a border between only two of the three of the plurality of sectors, the at least one third relay between the at least one first relay and the at least one second relay, each of the two sectors corresponding to a different one of the base stations.

2. The wireless communication system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one first relay is connected to each of the plurality of base stations.

3. The wireless communication system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one first relay is configured to transmit and receive data according to a joint schedule, the joint schedule coordinating reception by the at least one first relay and communications to at least one mobile station.

4. The wireless communication system of claim 1 , wherein

the at least one first relay is a 6-antenna decode and forward relay configured to communicate with at least two 3-antenna base stations of the plurality of base stations,

the at least one first relay is configured to receive transmissions from the plurality of base stations in a first time slot,

the at least one relay is configured to transmit to the at least one mobile station during a second time slot in conjunction with the plurality of base stations, and

the first and second time slots are consecutive and orthogonal.

5. The wireless communication system of claim 4 , wherein

the at least one first relay is configured to receive transmissions from the plurality of base stations on a multiple-access channel in the first time slot and to transmit to the at least one mobile station on a broadcast channel in the second time slot,

the multiple-access channel is implemented using one of zero-forcing beam-forming and minimum mean squared error beam-forming, and

the broadcast channel is implemented using zero-forcing beam-forming.

6. The wireless communication system of claim 1 , further comprising:

at least one fourth relay midway between at least one of the plurality of base stations and the first 3-sector vertex,

wherein the at least one first relay is one first relay,

the at least one second relay is three second relays, and

the at least one third relay is three third relays.

7. The wireless communication system of claim 1 , wherein

the at least one first relay is a 3-antenna decode and forward relay configured to communicate with a plurality of 3-antenna base stations of the plurality of base stations,

the at least one first relay is configured to receive transmissions from the plurality of base stations in a first time slot,

the at least one first relay is configured to transmit to the at least one mobile station during a second time slot, and

the first and second time slots are consecutive and orthogonal.

8. The wireless communication system of claim 7 , wherein the at least one first relay is configured to receive transmissions from the plurality of base stations on a multiple-access channel in the first time slot and to transmit to the at least one mobile station on a broadcast channel in the second time slot.

9. The wireless communication system of claim 8 , wherein

the multiple-access channel is implemented using one of successive interference cancellation decoding and minimum mean squared error beam-forming, and

the broadcast channel is implemented using zero-forcing beam-forming.

10. A wireless communication system, comprising:

a plurality of relays uniformly distributed in a circular pattern at a distance from a base station, the distance being about half a radial distance between the base station and an outer border of at least one of a plurality of sectors of the base station, wherein

the plurality of sectors is at least three sectors,

the base station includes at least 6 antennas per sector,

the plurality of relays is at least 6 decode and forward relays,

the at least 6 relays are omni-directional, and

each of the at least 6 relays includes at least 3 antennas.

11. The wireless communication system of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of relays are configured to transmit and receive according to a joint schedule, the joint schedule coordinating reception of communications from the base station by the plurality of relays and communications to at least one mobile station.

12. The wireless communication system of claim 10 , wherein

the at least six relays are configured to receive transmissions from the base station in a first time slot,

the at least six relays are configured to transmit to the at least one mobile station in a second time slot in conjunction with the base station, and

the first and second time slots are consecutive and orthogonal.

13. The wireless communication system of claim 12 , wherein the at least one mobile station is three mobile stations.

14. The wireless communication system of claim 12 , wherein the at least 6 relays are configured to receive transmissions from the base station on a broadcast channel in the first time slot and to transmit to the at least one mobile station on an interference channel in the second time slot.

15. The wireless communication system of claim 14 , wherein the broadcast channel is implemented using one of Dirty Paper Coding and Optimal Linear Pre-coding.
