Abstract

A toothbrush can include a handle and a head. At least one bristle can be attached to the head. The toothbrush can also have an illumination member, an illumination circuit and an activation device. A pliant base on the handle can be used to activate the activation device to initiate the illumination circuit.

Claims (54)

1. A toothbrush comprising:

a handle made of a first material and having a base and a head, with a cavity in the base;

a light positioned in the cavity in the base;

a plurality of bristles attached to the head of the handle;

a power source connected to the light and fixedly positioned within the cavity;

a switch mechanism configured to illuminate the light; and

a pliant base comprising a second material different from the first material, the second material being flexible, the pliant base having a first portion and a second portion, the first portion attached to the base of the handle, the second portion extending therefrom and positioned around at least a portion of the switch mechanism such that the second portion is configured to move with respect to the first portion when a force is applied to the second portion which contacts the switch mechanism and illuminates the light;

wherein the switch mechanism comprising a first member and a second member, the second member positioned within the pliant base and configured to move with the second portion of the pliant base, wherein the second member is positioned with respect to the first member such that the second member contacts the first member when the pliant base is moved inward towards the handle but does not contact the first member when the pliant base is in an unstressed condition, wherein when the first member contacts the second member, the light is illuminated for a period of time.

2. The toothbrush of claim 1 , wherein the second member comprises a first elongate rod.

3. The toothbrush of claim 2 , wherein the first member comprises a second elongate rod.

4. The toothbrush of claim 3 , wherein the second member further comprises a helical spring surrounding the second elongate rod.

5. The toothbrush of claim 1 , wherein the pliant base is connected to the handle at an end of the handle opposite the head.

6. The toothbrush of claim 1 , wherein the second member comprises at least one of a metal mesh, a truncated cone, or a helical spring.

7. The toothbrush of claim 1 , wherein the period of time is about 60 seconds.

8. The toothbrush of claim 1 , wherein the first portion is attached to and surrounding the base of the handle.

9. A toothbrush comprising:

a handle having a first end and a second end, the handle defining a cavity that has a cavity opening from the second end;

a head coupled to the first end of the handle, the head comprising a plurality of bristles;

a light positioned in the cavity;

a power source coupled to the light in fixed positional relationship within the cavity;

a pliant base coupled to the second end of the handle, the pliant base surrounding at least a portion of the second end including the cavity opening and providing a water tight seal around the cavity opening;

a first switch member;

a second switch member that is configured to move with the pliant base such that the second switch member contacts the first switch member when pressure is applied to the pliant base but does not contact the first switch member when the pliant base is in an unstressed condition; and

a control circuit configured such that contact between the first contact member and the second contact member completes a circuit and initiates illumination of the light for a set period of time.

10. The toothbrush of claim 9 , wherein the second switch member has a flexible portion and an extension portion wherein the extension portion extends within the flexible portion.

11. The toothbrush of claim 9 , wherein the second switch member comprises a first generally elongated rod.

12. The toothbrush of claim 11 , wherein the first switch member comprises a second generally elongated rod.

13. The toothbrush of claim 9 , wherein the second switch member comprises a helical spring, the first switch member and the helical spring both extend from a base member.

14. The toothbrush of claim 13 , wherein the first switch member comprises a generally elongated rod extending from the base member and positioned within the helical spring.

15. The toothbrush of claim 9 , wherein the set period of time is about 60 seconds.

16. The toothbrush of claim 9 , wherein the second switch member comprises at least one of a metal mesh, a truncated cone, or a helical spring.

17. A toothbrush comprising:

a handle having a base and a head;

a light positioned in the handle;

a pliant base comprising a flexible material different from a material of the handle and having a first portion attached to the base of the handle and a second portion extending therefrom and movable with respect to the base of the handle, wherein the second portion of the pliant base is configured to move with respect to the first portion to activate the light;

a plurality of bristles attached to the head of the handle;

a power source fixedly connected to the light; and

a switch mechanism comprising an elongate rod that is separate from and unconnected to the pliant base and that extends within the pliant base;

wherein the pliant base surrounds the elongate rod such that manipulation of the pliant base causes a movement of part of the switch mechanism to activate the light, so that the light is illuminated for a period of time.

18. The toothbrush of claim 17 , the switch mechanism further comprising a helical spring surrounding the elongate rod.

19. The toothbrush of claim 18 , wherein the switch mechanism further comprises a base member wherein the elongate rod extends from the base member and is positioned within the helical spring.

20. The toothbrush of claim 17 , wherein the base of the handle comprises at least one annular ring, the pliant base being secured to the at least one annular ring.

21. A toothbrush comprising:

a handle made of a first material and having a base and a head, with a hollow space in the base;

a light positioned in the hollow space;

a plurality of bristles attached to the head;

a power source connected to the light within the hollow space;

a switch mechanism configured to illuminate the light; and

a pliant base made of a second material different from the first material, the second material being flexible, the pliant base having a first portion and a second portion, the first portion attached to the base of the handle, the second portion extending therefrom and positioned around at least a portion of the switch mechanism such that the second portion is configured to move with respect to the first portion when a force is applied to the second portion which contacts the switch mechanism and illuminates the light;

wherein the switch mechanism comprising a first member and a second member, the second member positioned within the pliant base and configured to move with the second portion of the pliant base, wherein the second member is positioned with respect to the first member such that the second member contacts the first member when the pliant base is moved inward towards the handle but does not contact the first member when the pliant base is in an initial static condition, wherein when the first member contacts the second member, the light is illuminated for a period of time.

22. The toothbrush of claim 21 , wherein the second member comprises a first elongate rod.

23. The toothbrush of claim 22 , wherein the first member comprises a second elongate rod.

24. The toothbrush of claim 21 , wherein the pliant base is connected to the handle at an end of the handle opposite the head.

25. The toothbrush of claim 21 , wherein the first portion is attached to and surrounding the base of the handle.
