Abstract

A photocatalyst is provided that comprises activated carbon produced from date pits, impregnated with TiO 2 . The activated carbon can have a porous surface that can attract and trap pollutants flowing in air or water. The photocatalyst can be made by a method that includes preparing activated carbon by calcining date pits to form a precursor material, and then impregnating the precursor material with titanium dioxide.

Claims (25)

1. Date pit-derived activated carbon made from a method comprising:

contacting date pits with a phosphoric acid aqueous solution having a phosphoric acid concentration of from about 5% by weight to about 20% by weight, to form treated date pits;

drying the treated date pits at a temperature of from about 80° C. to about 150° C. for a period of from about 1 hour to about 12 hours, to form treated, dried date pits;

calcining the treated, dried date pits at a temperature of 850° C. under a nitrogen blanket to cause the treated, dried date pits to thermally decompose and form a calcined product;

treating the calcined product with carbon dioxide gas; and

pulverizing and screening the carbon dioxide gas-treated calcined product to form uniformly sized date pit-derived activated carbon particles, the date pit-derived activated carbon particles having a surface area of 665 m 2 /g.

2. A photocatalyst comprising an impregnated product produced by a method consisting of:

contacting date pits with a phosphoric acid aqueous solution having a phosphoric acid concentration of from about 5% by weight to about 20% by weight, to form treated date pits;

drying the treated date pits at a temperature of from about 80° C. to about 150° C. for a period of from about 1 hour to about 12 hours, to form treated, dried date pits;

heating the treated, dried date pits at a temperature of 850° C. and under conditions to cause the treated date pits to thermally decompose and form date pit-derived activated carbon;

pulverizing and screening the date pit-derived activated carbon; and

impregnating the date pit-derived activated carbon with a titanium dioxide solution, to form an impregnated product in the form of a photocatalyst, the titanium dioxide solution comprising titanium dioxide particles having an average particle size of from 0.01 μm to 0.6 μm and being doped with at least chloride ions.

3. The photocatalyst of claim 2 , wherein the titanium dioxide particles have a rutile crystalline polymorph form, an average particle size of from 0.1 μm to 0.6 μm, and are doped with Cl − ions and Al 3+ ions.

4. The photocatalyst of claim 3 , wherein the titanium dioxide particles are also doped with Na + ions.

5. The photocatalyst of claim 2 , wherein the titanium dioxide particles have an average particle size of from 0.1 μm to 0.5 μm.

6. The photocatalyst of claim 2 , wherein the titanium dioxide particles have an average particle size of from 0.2 μm to 0.4 μm.

7. The photocatalyst of claim 2 , wherein the titanium dioxide particles have an average particle size of 0.3 μm.

8. A photocatalyst comprising an impregnated product produced by a method consisting of:

contacting date pits with a phosphoric acid aqueous solution having a phosphoric acid concentration of from about 5% by weight to about 20% by weight, to form treated date pits;

drying the treated date pits at a temperature of from about 80° C. to about 150° C. for a period of from about 1 hour to about 12 hours, to form treated, dried date pits;

heating the treated, dried date pits at a temperature of 850° C. and under conditions to cause the treated date pits to thermally decompose and form date pit-derived activated carbon;

pulverizing and screening the date pit-derived activated carbon; and

impregnating the date pit-derived activated carbon with an impregnating solution comprising from 10% by weight to 50% by weight titanium dioxide particles having an average particle size of from 0.005 μm to 1 μm, being doped with Cl − ions, and having an anatase crystalline polymorph form, to form the impregnated product.

9. The photocatalyst of claim 8 , wherein the impregnating solution comprises from about 20% by weight to about 30% by weight titanium dioxide.

10. The photocatalyst of claim 8 , wherein the titanium dioxide particles are also doped with Na + ions and Al 3+ ions.
