Abstract

A method and an apparatus for reporting a capability of a User Equipment (UE) supporting advanced functions such as Carrier Aggregation (CA) are provided. The method includes checking, when a control message requesting a capability report is received, a Radio Access Technology (RAT) type and transmitting, when the RAT type is set to Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access (EUTRA), at least one band combination information on at least one band combination supported by the terminal. The UE capability report method is capable of reporting the UE capability related to advanced functions, such as CA and Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO), to a network efficiently with the least amount of information, thereby resulting in an improvement of radio resource efficiency.

Claims (41)

1. A method for reporting capability of a terminal, the method comprising:

receiving, by the terminal, a User Equipment (UE) capability enquiry message from a base station;

checking whether an Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access (EUTRA) indicator is included in the received UE capability enquiry message received from the base station;

setting, if the EUTRA indicator is included in the UE capability enquiry message, a Radio Access Technology (RAT) type of a UE capability message to EUTRA; and

transmitting, by the terminal, the UE capability message comprising at least one band combination information on at least one band combination supported by the terminal,

wherein the at least one band combination information comprises at least one band parameter,

wherein the at least one band parameter comprises information indicating a band, and information on carrier aggregation (CA) information and information about a number of layers, and

wherein the CA information associated with aggregated bandwidth configuration and maximum number of cells of the band combination.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the transmitting of the at least one band combination information comprises combining at least one unit capability having a same measurement gap requirement into the at least one band combination information.

The method of claim 2 , wherein each of the at least one unit capability comprises at least two of a band indicator indicating a band, a Carrier Aggregation (CA) BandWidth (BW)/Cell index as a parameter obtained by combining a number of cells supporting a corresponding band combination and a bandwidth of the corresponding band combination, and a number of layers that indicates a maximum number of layers that may be used on the corresponding band combination.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein all the combinations of the unit capability in each band combination information are supported by the UE.

5. A terminal for reporting terminal capability, the terminal comprising:

a transceiver configured to receive a User Equipment (UE) capability enquiry message from a base station and to transmit a UE capability message comprising at least one band combination information on at least one band combination supported by the terminal to the base station;

a controller configured to check whether an Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access (EUTRA) indicator is included in the received UE capability enquiry message received from the base station; and

setting, if the EUTRA indicator is included in the UE capability enquiry message, a Radio Access Technology (RAT) type of the UE capability message to EUTRA,

wherein the at least one band combination information comprises at least one band parameter,

wherein the at least one band parameter comprises information indicating a band, and information on carrier aggregation (CA) information and information about a number of layers, and

wherein the CA information associated with aggregated bandwidth configuration and maximum number of cells of the band combination.

6. The terminal of claim 5 , wherein the controller combines at least one unit capability having a same measurement gap requirement into the at least one band combination information.

The terminal of claim 6 , wherein each of the at least one unit capability comprises at least two of a band indicator indicating a band, a Carrier Aggregation (CA) BandWidth (BW)/Cell index as a parameter obtained by combining a number of cells supporting a corresponding band combination and a bandwidth of the corresponding band combination, and a number of layers that indicates a maximum number of layers that may be used on the corresponding band combination.

8. The terminal of claim 5 , wherein all the combinations of the unit capability in each band combination information are supported by the UE.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein all the combinations of the unit capability in each band combination information have a same measurement gap requirement.

10. The terminal of claim 5 , wherein all the combinations of the unit capability in each band combination information have a same measurement gap requirement.

11. A method for receiving capability of a terminal by a base station, the method comprising:

transmitting, by the base station, a User Equipment (UE) capability enquiry message comprising an Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access (EUTRA) indicator to the terminal; and

receiving, by the base station, a UE capability message comprising at least one band combination information on at least one band combination supported by the terminal from the terminal,

wherein a Radio Access Technology (RAT) type of the UE capability message is set to EUTRA based on the EUTRA indicator being included in the UE capability enquiry message, and

wherein the at least one band combination information comprises at least one band parameter,

wherein the at least one band parameter comprises information indicating a band, and information on carrier aggregation (CA) information and information about a number of layers, and

wherein the CA information associated with aggregated bandwidth configuration and maximum number of cells of the band combination.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein all the combinations of the unit capability in each band combination information are supported by the UE.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein all the combinations of the unit capability in each band combination information have a same measurement gap requirement.

14. A base station for receiving capability of a terminal, the base station comprising:

a transceiver configured to transmit a User Equipment (UE) capability enquiry message to the terminal and receive a UE capability message comprising at least one band combination information on at least one band combination supported by the terminal from the terminal; and

a controller configured to set an Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access (EUTRA) indicator in the UE capability enquiry message,

wherein a Radio Access Technology (RAT) type of the UE capability message is set to EUTRA based on the EUTRA indicator being included in the UE capability enquiry message, and

wherein the at least one band combination information comprises at least one band parameter,

wherein the at least one band parameter comprises information indicating a band, and information on carrier aggregation (CA) information and information about a number of layers, and

wherein the CA information associated with aggregated bandwidth configuration and maximum number of cells of the band combination.

15. The base station of claim 14 , wherein all the combinations of the unit capability in each band combination information are supported by the UE.

16. The base station of claim 14 , wherein all the combinations of the unit capability in each band combination information have a same measurement gap requirement.
