Preparation of uranium compounds
View Patent ↗UI 3 (1,4-dioxane) 1.5 and UI 4 (1,4-dioxane) 2 , were synthesized in high yield by reacting turnings of elemental uranium with iodine dissolved in 1,4-dioxane under mild conditions. These molecular compounds of uranium are thermally stable and excellent precursor materials for synthesizing other molecular compounds of uranium including alkoxide, amide, organometallic, and halide compounds.
1. A composition selected from the group consisting of UI 4 (1,4-dioxane) 2 , [UCl 4 (1,4-dioxane)] 2 , and UI 3 (1,4-dioxane) 1.5 .
2. A process for synthesizing UI x (1,4-dioxane) y , comprising:
reacting suitable amount of elemental uranium with a suitable amount of iodine (I 2 ) dissolved in 1,4-dioxane to form a suspension comprising a solid,
isolating the solid from the suspension, and
drying the solid under reduced pressure, thereby synthesizing UI x (1,4-dioxane) y , wherein x is 3 and y is 1.5, or wherein x is 4 and y is 2.
3. A process for synthesizing a molecular compound of uranium, comprising:
providing a solution of UI x (1,4-dioxane) y wherein x is 3 and y is 1.5, or wherein x is 4 and y is 2, and
reacting the solution of UI x (1,4-dioxane) y under suitable conditions to form the molecular compound of uranium.

The process of claim 3 , wherein a solution of UI 3 (1,4-dioxane) 1.5 is reacted under suitable conditions to form a molecular compound selected from UI 3 (tetrahydrofuran) 4 , UI 3 (pyridine) 4 , U(OAryl) 3 (tetrahydrofuran), U(N(SiMe 3 ) 2 ) 3 , (C 5 Me 4 R) 2 U(I)(tetrahydrofuran) wherein R is selected from CH 3 - and CH 3 CH 2 , and U(═N t Bu) 2 (I) 2 (O═PPh 3 ) 2 ).

The process of claim 3 , wherein a solution of UI 4 (1,4-dioxane) 2 is reacted under suitable conditions to form a molecular compound selected from UI 4 (diethyl ether) 2 , [UCl 4 (1,4-dioxane)] 2 , UCl 4 (N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylenediamine) 2 , fc[NSi( t Bu)Me 2 ] 2 UI 2 (THF), [(Me 3 Si) 2 N] 2 U[κ 2 -(C,N)—CH 2 Si(Me) 2 N(SiMe 3 )], U(OAryl) 4 , and (C 5 Me 5 ) 2 UI 2 .
