Abstract

Providing high quality voice/sound communications over a local loop of a telephone network is disclosed. The method includes receiving a voice signal, digitizing the voice signal into a high quality voice signal, utilizing sampling rates and/or sizes above the threshold, negotiating voice processing characteristics between a customer premises equipment and a network element, receiving speech at a customer premises equipment according to the negotiation, converting the received speech into high bandwidth signal and transmitting the high bandwidth signal to a telephone local loop, transmitting the high bandwidth signal from the local loop to wideband node that packetizes the high bandwidth signal for transmission to a packet network and receiving the packetized signal from the packet network at a switch that switches between an on-network or off-network status. A voice over IP platform can route packetized signals from the packet network to the telephone network or another packet network.

Claims (28)

1. A system, comprising:

at least one processor; and

a non-transitory computer-readable medium having stored therein instructions which, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to perform operations comprising:

receiving, via a telephone local loop, a sound signal based on audio received at a communication device, wherein the sound signal is digitized from the audio; and

transmitting, to a packet network, a packetized signal generated based on the sound signal, wherein a network switch is configured to change between an on-network status associated with a first audio quality and an off-network status associated with a second, lower audio quality based on the packetized signal.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein in response to the network switch being in the off-network status, the network switch is configured to transmit the packetized signal to a telephone network.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the telephone network is a publicly switched telephone network.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the packet network comprises at least one of a voice over IP network, an asynchronous transfer mode network, and an Ethernet network.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein in response to the network switch being in the on-network status, the network switch is configured to transmit the packetized signal from the communication device to a receiving communication device without using a telephone network.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the packetized signal comprises a voice call.

7. The system of claim 5 , wherein in response to the network switch being in the off-network status, the network switch is configured to transmit the packetized signal from the communication device to a receiving communication device through the telephone network.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the network switch is a softswitch.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein transmitting the packetized signal includes transmitting according to negotiated characteristics associated with sound reception and transmission, the negotiated characteristics comprising at least one of sound compression, sound coding, signal sampling rate, and a signal transmission rate.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the negotiated characteristics comprise technical capabilities of the communication device.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the negotiated characteristics further comprise technical capabilities of a receiving communication device.

12. The system of claim 9 , wherein the negotiated characteristics relate to capabilities of the packet network.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the negotiated characteristics further relate to bottlenecks of the packet network.

14. The system of claim 1 , wherein the network switch is configured to utilize time domain switching.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the time domain switching is configured to use an integrated services digital network transport.

16. A method, comprising:

receiving, from a telephone local loop, a sound signal based on audio received at a communication device, wherein the sound signal is digitized from the audio utilizing sampling rates greater than 8000 samples per second and sample sizes greater than 8 bits per sample; and

transmitting, to a packet network, a packetized signal generated based on the sound signal, wherein a network switch is configured to change between an on-network status associated with a first audio quality and an off-network status associated with a second, lower audio quality based on the packetized signal.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein in response to the network switch being in the off-network status, the network switch is configured to transmit the packetized signal to a telephone network.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the telephone network is a publicly switched telephone network.

19. The method of claim 16 , wherein the packet network comprises at least one of a voice over IP network, an asynchronous transfer mode network, and an Ethernet network.

20. A non-transitory, computer-readable medium having stored therein instructions which, when executed by a computer system, cause the computer system to perform operations comprising:

receiving, from a telephone local loop, a sound signal based on audio received at a communication device, wherein the sound signal is digitized from the audio utilizing sampling greater than 8000 samples per second and sample sizes greater than 8 bits per sample; and

transmitting, to a packet network, a packetized signal generated based on the sound signal, wherein a network switch is configured to change between an on-network status associated with a first audio quality and an off-network status associated with a second, lower audio quality based on the packetized signal.
