Abstract

Connecting USB devices with USB hosts over distinct network paths, including the following steps: Connecting USB hosts with respective USB host adaptors (USBHs), essentially according to USB specification timings. Connecting USB devices with respective USB device adaptors (USBDs). Enabling the USBDs and the USBHs to communicate over a network that can connect each USBD with each USBH. Initiating USB connections over the network between the USB devices and the USB hosts. And operating at least two of the USB connections over the network essentially simultaneously and without any common network node.

Claims (34)

1. A method for connecting USB devices with USB hosts over distinct network paths, comprising:

connecting first and second USB hosts with respective first and second USB host adaptors (USBHs); the USB hosts communicate with their respective USBHs essentially according to USB specification timings;

connecting first, second, and third USB devices with respective first, second, and third USB device adaptors (USBDs), essentially according to USB specification timings;

enabling the USBDs and the USBHs to communicate over a network that can connect each USBD with each USBH;

initiating a first USB connection over the network between the first USB device and the first USB host, via the first USBH and the first USBD and over at least one cable longer than 5 m;

initiating a second USB connection over the network between the second USB device and the first USB host, via the first USBH and the second USBD;

initiating a third USB connection over the network between the third USB device and the second USB host, via the second USBH and the third USBD; and

operating the first and third USB connections over the network essentially simultaneously and without any common network node.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising disconnecting the first and third USB connections over the network, initiating a fourth USB connection over the network between the first USB device and the second USB host, and initiating a fifth USB connection over the network between the third USB device and the first USB host; wherein the fourth and fifth USB connections over the network operate essentially simultaneously and without any common network node.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the network guarantees maximum network latency variation below a first predefined value, and guarantees maximum round trip latency over the network below a second predefined value.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising connecting the USB devices with the respective USBDs without connecting the USB devices with any of the USB hosts.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the network is an HDBaseT network.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the network is a packet switching network.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising maintaining fixed network paths for the USB connections over the network.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the network guarantees maximum network latency variation below 50 microseconds.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the network guarantees maximum round-trip latency below 200 microseconds.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the network guarantees the throughput of the USB connections over the network.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the network guarantees maximum network latency variation below 50 microseconds, and maximum round-trip latency below 200 microseconds.

12. A network configured to connect USB devices and USB hosts over distinct network paths, comprising:

first and second USB host adaptors (USBHs) configured to connect with first and second USB hosts, respectively; the USB hosts communicate with their respective USBHs essentially according to USB specification timings;

first, second, and third USB device adaptors (USBDs) configured to connect with first, second, and third USB devices, respectively, and essentially according to USB specification timings;

the network configured to support connections between each USBD and each USBH;

the network configured to initiate a first USB connection over the network between the first USB device and the first USB host, via the first USBH and the first USBD, and over at least one cable longer than 5 m;

the network is further configured to initiate a second USB connection over the network between the second USB device and the first USB host via the first USBH and the second USBD, and to initiate a third USB connection over the network between the third USB device and the second USB host via the second USBH and the third USBD;

wherein the first and third USB connections over the network operate essentially simultaneously and without any common network node.

13. The network of claim 12 , wherein the network is configured to guarantee maximum network latency variation below a first predefined value, and is configured to guarantee maximum round trip latency over the network below a second predefined value.

14. The network of claim 12 , wherein the USBDs are further configured to connect to the USB devices without connecting the USB devices with any of the USB hosts.

15. The network of claim 12 , wherein the network is an HDBaseT network.

16. The network of claim 12 , wherein the network is a packet switching network.

17. The network of claim 12 , wherein the network is configured to provide fixed network paths for the USB connections over the network.

18. The network of claim 17 , wherein the network is configured to guarantee maximum network latency variation below 50 microseconds.

19. The network of claim 17 , wherein the network is configured to guarantee maximum round-trip latency below 200 microseconds.

20. The network of claim 12 , wherein the network is further configured to guarantee the throughput of the USB connections over the network.

21. The network of claim 20 , wherein the network is configured to guarantee maximum network latency variation below 50 microseconds, and maximum round-trip latency below 200 microseconds.
