Abstract

A coupling includes at least one segment, each segment including at least one inner surface, at least one outer surface, at least two ends, and a fastener pad protruding proximate to each end, each fastener pad defining a fastener hole, each fastener hole having an axial length and a transverse length, wherein the transverse length is longer than the axial length; an annular gasket contacting the inner surface of at least one segment, the annular gasket including at least one sealing surface directed radially inwardly and an outer surface directed radially outwardly; and at least one fastener disposed within at least one fastener hole, each fastener including a head portion and a shaft portion, each shaft portion including at least one of a threaded portion, a shank portion, and a collar portion, wherein at least one portion of the shaft portion is sized to engage at least one fastener hole.

Claims (34)

1. A method of coupling first and second pipe elements in end-to-end facing relationship comprising:

obtaining a coupling, the coupling including

at least one segment, each segment including at least one inner surface, at least one outer surface, at least two ends, and a fastener pad protruding proximate to each end, each fastener pad defining a fastener hole, each fastener hole having an axial length and a transverse length, wherein the transverse length is longer than the axial length, wherein the at least one segment includes a tongue, wherein a mating surface of the tongue is angled at a non-zero angle with respect to a horizontal axis of the segment;

an annular gasket contacting the inner surface of at least one segment, the annular gasket including at least one sealing surface directed radially inwardly and an outer surface directed radially outwardly; and

at least one fastener disposed within at least one fastener hole, each fastener including a head portion and a shaft portion, each shaft portion including at least one of a threaded portion, a shank portion, and a collar portion, wherein at least one portion of the shaft portion is sized to engage at least one fastener hole;

slipping the coupling onto the first pipe element beyond the end of the first pipe element;

aligning the second pipe element in end-to-end facing relationship with the first pipe element;

slipping the coupling onto the second pipe element such that the segments of the coupling straddle the ends of the first and second pipe elements; and

engaging each fastener to deform each segment in contact with the outer surfaces of the first and second pipe elements.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the collar portion of the at least one fastener engages the at least one fastener hole, the collar portion including an axial length and a transverse length, and wherein each axial length is smaller than each transverse length.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein each axial length of each collar portion is smaller than each axial length of each fastener hole, wherein each transverse length of each collar portion is smaller than each transverse length of each fastener hole, and wherein each axial length of each fastener hole is smaller than each transverse length of each collar portion.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein each segment includes two contact surfaces, wherein engaging each fastener to deform each segment includes contacting the contact surfaces with the outer surfaces of the first and second pipe elements.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the annular gasket includes at least one center rib and at least two sealing ridges, the method further comprising contacting at least one of the at least one center rib and the at least two sealing ridges with the outer surfaces of the first and second pipe elements to form a seal.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein contacting the at least one of the at least one center rib and the at least two sealing ridges with the outer surfaces of the first and second pipe elements to form a seal includes deforming the annular gasket.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the center rib includes two sealing surface, the sealing surfaces in contact with the outer surfaces of the pipe elements to form a seal upon deforming the annular gasket.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein a central groove separates the two sealing surfaces of the center rib.

9. The method of claim 5 , wherein each sealing ridge includes a sealing surface, the sealing surfaces in contact with the outer surfaces of the pipe elements to form a seal.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein each segment defines a groove.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first pipe element includes a groove having a groove surface, and wherein engaging each fastener to deform each segment in contact with the outer surfaces of the first and second pipe elements includes a contact surface of each segment contacting the groove surface.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein:

the groove is a first groove, the groove surface is a first groove surface, and the contact surface is a first contact surface;

the second pipe element includes a second groove having a second groove surface; and

engaging each fastener to deform each segment in contact with the outer surfaces of the first and second pipe elements includes a second contact surface of each segment contacting the second groove surface.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one segment includes

a first shoulder having a first top surface and a second shoulder having a second top surface, wherein:

prior to deformation of the at least one segment, the first top surface of the first shoulder is non-parallel with the second top surface of the second shoulder; and

after deformation of the at least one segment, the first top surface of the first shoulder is parallel with the second top surface of the second shoulder.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the coupling includes two segments and two fasteners.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the head portion of a one of the at least one fastener is angled with a top surface of a shoulder of a one of the at least one segment prior to engaging the at least one fastener to deform the at least one segment in contact with the outer surfaces of the first and second pipe elements; and

the head portion of the one of the at least one fastener is flush with the top surface of the shoulder of the one of the at least one segment after engaging the at least one fastener to deform the at least one segment in contact with the outer surfaces of the first and second pipe elements.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one segment includes a shoulder including a top surface and a bottom surface, wherein the top surface and bottom surface are parallel.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein each fastener pad includes a top surface and a bottom surface, wherein each fastener hole includes a top aperture at the top surface and a bottom aperture at the bottom surface, wherein the top aperture is smaller than the bottom aperture.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one segment includes a shoulder having a top surface and a bottom surface, wherein the top surface and the bottom surface of the shoulder are angled at a non-zero angle with respect to a horizontal axis of the segment, and wherein the angle of the mating surface of the tongue is greater than the angle of the top surface and the angle of the bottom surface.
