Abstract

Certain example embodiments relate to seals for glass articles. Certain example embodiments relate to a composition used for sealing an insulted glass unit. In certain example embodiments the composition includes vanadium oxide, barium oxide, zinc oxide, and at least one additional additive. For instance, another additive that is a different metal oxide or different metal chloride may be provided. In certain example embodiments, a composition may be combined with a binder solution that substantially or completely burns out by the time the composition is melted. In certain example embodiments, a CTE filler is included with a frit material. In certain example embodiments, a vacuum insulated glass unit includes first and second glass substrates that are sealed together with a seal that includes the above-described composition.

Claims (55)

1. A vacuum insulated glass (VIG) window unit, comprising:

first and second substantially parallel, spaced apart thermally tempered glass substrates; and

an edge seal provided around a periphery of the first and/or second thermally tempered glass substrates of the VIG window unit to form a hermetic seal therebetween and at least partially defining a gap between the first and second substrates,

wherein the gap is provided at a pressure less than atmospheric,

wherein the edge seal is formed from edge seal material including (a) a coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) material that is substantially lead-free, and (b) a frit material having a composition comprising:

Normalized

Ingredient

Mole %

vanadium oxide

~45-50%,

barium oxide

~20-23%, and

zinc oxide

~19-22%.

wherein the vanadium oxide, the barium oxide, and the zinc oxide are the three largest elements making up the frit material composition, and

wherein the edge seal material has a first CTE value that is within about 15% of soda lime silicate glass by virtue of the CTE material's composition.

2. The VIG unit of claim 1 , wherein the CTE material comprises elements that are substantially spherical in form and wherein a plurality of said elements are between about 60 and 100 microns in size.

3. The VIG unit of claim 2 , wherein elements of the CTE material comprise molybdenum.

4. The VIG unit of claim 2 , wherein the elements have an average diameter or major distance of between about 70 and 90 microns.

5. The VIG unit of claim 2 , wherein the elements that are sustainably spherical in form include elements that are generally oblong.

6. The VIG unit of claim 1 , wherein edge seal material is melted in forming the edge seal, and wherein a melting temperature of the edge seal material is less than about 400 degrees C.

7. The VIG unit of claim 2 , wherein the elements that are sustainably spherical in form comprise greater than 90%, by volume, of materials of the CTE material.

8. The VIG unit of claim 1 , wherein a base composition of the frit material includes at least four oxide-, chloride-, and/or fluoride-based additives.

9. A vacuum insulted glass (VIG) window unit, comprising:

first and second substantially parallel, spaced apart thermally tempered glass substrates; and

an edge seal provided around a periphery of the first and/or second thermally tempered glass substrates of the VIG window unit to form a hermetic seal therebetween and at least partially defining a gap between the first and second substrates,

wherein the gap is provided at a pressure less than atmospheric,

wherein the edge seal is formed from edge seal material including (a) a coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) material that is substantially lead-free, and (b) a frit material having a composition comprising vanadium oxide, barium oxide, and zinc oxide;

wherein the vanadium oxide, the barium oxide, and the zinc oxide are the three largest elements making up the frit material composition;

wherein the CTE material comprises elements that are substantially spherical in form and wherein a plurality of said elements are between about 60 and 100 microns in size; and

wherein the edge seal material has a first CTE value that is within about 15% of soda lime silicate glass by virtue of the CTE material's composition.

10. The VIG unit of claim 9 , wherein elements of the CTE material comprise molybdenum.

11. The VIG unit of claim 9 , wherein the elements have an average diameter or major distance of between about 70 and 90 microns.

~20-23%, and

zinc oxide

~19-22%; and

wherein the vanadium oxide, the barium oxide, and the zinc oxide are the three largest elements making up the frit material composition, and

wherein the CTE material comprises elements that are substantially spherical in form and wherein a plurality of said elements are between about 60 and 100 microns in size, and wherein the edge seal material has a first CTE value that is within about 15% of soda lime silicate glass by virtue of the CTE material's composition.

13. The VIG unit of claim 12 , wherein elements of the CTE material comprise molybdenum.

14. The VIG unit of claim 12 , wherein the elements have an average diameter or major distance of between about 70 and 90 microns.
