Abstract

The invention relates to a device comprising a multilayered structure with a first portion and a second portion wherein the first portion is conceived to be rolled about a first roller, said device comprising a second roller for receiving the second portion for at least partially counteracting the effects of mechanical strain induced in the multilayered structure upon said rolling. The first roller is rotated in a first direction, whereby the second roller is rotated in a second direction. Preferably, the diameters of the first roller and the second roller are equal. Alternatively, the edge portions A, B of the multilayer structure are suitably interconnected by stoppers for preventing creeping.

Claims (26)

1. An electronic device comprising:

a flexible display having a first portion and a second portion;

a first roller movable in a first plane; and

a second roller movable in a second plane parallel to the first plane;

wherein the first portion is adapted for being wound about the first roller, and the second portion is adapted for being wound about the second roller, arranged such that when the first roller and the second roller are moved apart, the first roller and the second roller rotate in the same direction to unwind the first portion and the second portion from the first roller and the second roller, respectively.

2. A device according to claim 1 , wherein the flexible display comprises a plurality of rows, each row being oriented in the roll up direction, which is transverse to a longitudinal axis of a spool or roll.

3. A device according to claim 2 , wherein the display comprises electrophoretic material.

4. A device according to claim 3 , said device being accommodated in a housing comprising a first portion and a second portion, said first portion being displaceably arranged with respect to the second portion, wherein the first roller is arranged in the first portion and the second roller is arranged in the second portion.

5. A device according to claim 2 , said device being accommodated in a housing comprising a first portion and a second portion, said first portion being displaceably arranged with respect to the second portion, wherein the first roller is arranged in the first portion and the second roller is arranged in the second portion.

6. A device according to claim 1 , wherein the multilayer structure comprises a compliant middle layer for at least partially counteracting the effects of mechanical strain induced in the multilayered structure upon being wound about the first roller.

7. A device according to claim 1 , wherein a number of revolutions of the flexible display on one of the first and second rollers with a smaller diameter is smaller than that on the other.

8. A device according to claim 1 , wherein the flexible display further has a color filter layer on the first and second portions, and the color filter layer comprises stripes extending along a roll up direction.

9. A device according to claim 8 , wherein the color filter layer is movable with respect to the first and second portions.

10. A device according to claim 8 , wherein two adjacent stripes of the color filter layer have a same color.

11. A device comprising:

a housing comprising a first portion and a second portion, wherein the first portion is displaceably arranged with respect to the second portion; and

a multilayered structure accommodated in the housing, wherein the multilayered structure comprises a first portion comprising a first edge and a second portion comprising a second edge wherein the first portion is adapted for being wound about a first roller and the second portion is wound about a second roller, the first roller and the second roller are rotatable in opposite directions, wherein layers forming the multilayered structure are mechanically interconnected at least in the area of the first edge and the second edge, and wherein the multilayer structure comprises a flexible display.

12. A device according to claim 11 , wherein the flexible display comprises a plurality of rows, each row oriented in the roll up direction, which is transverse to a longitudinal axis of a spool or roll.

13. A device according to claim 12 , wherein the display comprises electrophoretic material.

14. A device according to claim 13 , wherein the first roller is arranged in the first portion and the second roller is arranged in the second portion.

15. A device according to claim 12 , wherein the first roller is arranged in the first portion and the second roller is arranged in the second portion.

16. A device according to claim 11 , wherein the multilayer structure comprises a compliant middle layer for at least partially counteracting the effects of mechanical strain induced in the multilayered structure upon being wound about the first roller.

17. A device according to claim 11 , wherein a number of revolutions of the multilayered structure on one of the first and second rollers with a smaller diameter is smaller than that on the other.

18. A device according to claim 11 , wherein the multilayered structure further has a color filter layer on the first and second portions, and the color filter layer comprises stripes extending along a roll up direction.

19. A device according to claim 18 , wherein the color filter layer is movable with respect to the first and second portions.

20. A device according to claim 18 , wherein two adjacent stripes of the color filter layer have a same color.
