Abstract

Apparatus, and an associated method, for facilitating operation of a radio communication system that provides for multi rate data communications, such as a CDMA 2000 system that provides for 1xEV-DV communication services. A supplemental pilot, or control, signal generator embodied at a mobile station generates a supplemental pilot, or control, signal that is sent on a newly defined supplemental pilot, or control, channel. As the data rates of data communicated upon a reverse supplemental channel changes, corresponding changes are made to the power level of the reverse supplemental pilot, or control, signal.

Claims (35)

1. A method comprising:

determining a first reverse total pilot power sufficient for coherent demodulation of a reverse data channel based on a first data rate on the reverse data channel;

transmitting data on the reverse data channel, a pilot signal on a reverse pilot channel, and a supplemental pilot signal on a reverse supplemental pilot channel, wherein the pilot signal and the supplemental pilot signal provide the first reverse total pilot power sufficient for coherent demodulation of the reverse data channel; and

in response to a determination that the first data rate on the reverse data channel has changed to a second data rate different from the first data rate, adjusting the first reverse total pilot power to a second reverse total pilot power based on the second data rate on the reverse data channel, wherein the second reverse total pilot power is different from the first reverse total pilot power.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

in response to a determination that the first data rate on the reverse data channel is above a predetermined target level data rate, generating the supplemental pilot signal on the reverse supplemental pilot channel; and

selecting a power level of the supplemental pilot signal on the reverse supplemental pilot channel based on the first data rate on the reverse data channel.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising maintaining a power level of the pilot signal on the reverse pilot channel at a level independent of a change of the first data rate on the reverse data channel.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein a traffic-to-pilot (T/P) ratio of the reverse data channel is set according to a prior data rate on the reverse data channel, wherein the prior data rate is associated with a prior frame of data.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising inserting a reverse power control subchannel in each of the reverse pilot channel and the reverse supplemental pilot channel.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising inserting in the reverse power control subchannel in the reverse pilot channel an indication of the first data rate on the reverse data channel.

7. An apparatus comprising:

determination circuitry configured to determine a first reverse total pilot power sufficient for coherent demodulation of a reverse data channel based on a first data rate on the reverse data channel;

transmitter circuitry configured to transmit data on the reverse data channel, a pilot signal on a reverse pilot channel, and a supplemental pilot signal on a reverse supplemental pilot channel, wherein the pilot signal and the supplemental pilot signal provide the first reverse total pilot power sufficient for coherent demodulation of the reverse data channel; and

wherein the determination circuitry is configured to, in response to a determination that the first data rate on the reverse data channel has changed to a second data rate different from the first data rate, adjust the first reverse total pilot power to a second reverse total pilot power based on the second data rate on the reverse data channel, wherein the second reverse total pilot power is different from the first reverse total pilot power.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , further comprising a pilot signal generator configured to:

in response to a determination that the first data rate on the reverse data channel is above a predetermined target level data rate, generating the supplemental pilot signal on the reverse supplemental pilot channel; and

select a power level of the supplemental pilot signal on the reverse supplemental pilot channel based on the first data rate on the reverse data channel.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the transmitter circuitry is further configured to maintain a power level of the pilot signal on the reverse pilot channel at a level independent of a change of the first data rate on the reverse data channel.

10. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein a traffic-to-pilot (T/P) ratio of the reverse data channel is set according to a prior data rate on the reverse data channel, wherein the prior data rate is associated with a prior frame of data.

11. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the pilot signal generator is further configured to insert a reverse power control subchannel in each of the reverse pilot channel and the reverse supplemental pilot channel.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the pilot signal generator is further configured to insert in the reverse power control subchannel in the reverse pilot channel an indication of the first data rate on the reverse data channel.

13. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining that the second data rate on the reverse data channel has changed to a third data rate different from the second data rate; and

adjusting the second reverse total pilot power to a third reverse total pilot power based on the third data rate on the reverse data channel, wherein the third reverse total pilot power is different from the second reverse total pilot power.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second reverse total pilot power is lower than the first reverse total pilot power when the second data rate on the reverse data channel is lower than the first data rate on the reverse data channel.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second reverse total pilot power is greater than the first reverse total pilot power when the second data rate on the reverse data channel is greater than the first data rate on the reverse data channel.

16. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

delaying an adjustment in a power level of the pilot signal by at least one time frame.

17. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the determination circuitry is configured to:

determine that the second data rate on the reverse data channel has changed to a third data rate different from the second data rate; and

adjust the second reverse total pilot power to a third reverse total pilot power based on the third data rate on the reverse data channel, wherein the third reverse total pilot power is different from the second reverse total pilot power.

18. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the second reverse total pilot power is lower than the first reverse total pilot power when the second data rate on the reverse data channel is lower than the first data rate on the reverse data channel.

19. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the second reverse total pilot power is greater than the first reverse total pilot power when the second data rate on the reverse data channel is greater than the first data rate on the reverse data channel.

20. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the determination circuitry is configured to delay an adjustment in a power level of the pilot signal by at least one time frame.
