Abstract

The present invention is directed to a ball feed mechanism and associated method for use in a paintball loader. The ball feed mechanism includes a feeder which conveys or impels balls toward a feed neck, and a drive member which is concentric with the feeder. The feeder is coupled to the drive member. An electric motor is used to rotate the drive member which in turn causes the feeder to rotate. The feed mechanism includes sensors which detect the motion of the feeder and the drive member. A controller determines the position of the feeder relative to the drive member and actuates a motor when necessary.

Claims (27)

1. A paintball loader comprising:

a container;

a feed mechanism comprising a motor;

a sensor configured to directly detect movement of at least a portion of the feed mechanism; and

a controller in communication with the motor and the sensor, the controller configured to operate the motor in response to a signal generated by the sensor.

2. The paintball loader of claim 1 , wherein the controller comprises a microprocessor.

3. The paintball loader of claim 1 , wherein the feed mechanism comprises at least one indexing member and the controller determines movement of the feeder based on a signal provided by the sensor, indicative of the movement of the indexing member.

4. The paintball loader of claim 3 , wherein the sensor detects changes in the position of the indexing member, and the controller determines movement of the feeder based on the changes and operates the motor based on the changes.

5. The paintball loader of claim 3 , further comprising a second sensor, in communication with the controller, which detects the indexing member and sends a second signal to the controller, the controller comparing the signals to determine movement of the feeder.

6. A method of controlling a paintball loader motor comprising:

directly detecting movement of at least a portion of a feed mechanism of the paintball loader;

sending a signal indicative of movement of at least a portion of the feed mechanism; and

operating the motor based on the signal.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein movement of the feeder is detected by a sensor.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein a controller receives the signal and operates the motor.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the controller is a microprocessor.

10. A method of controlling projectile feeding in a paintball gun from a loader having a feed mechanism comprising a motor for feeding paintballs into the paintball gun, the feed mechanism comprising:

at least a portion adapted to move;

a sensor for detecting movement of at least a portion of the feed mechanism; and

a controller for controlling the motor, the method comprising the steps of:

detecting movement of at least a portion of the feed mechanism with the sensor;

receiving signals at the controller from the sensor;

determining movement of the feeder based on the signals received from the sensor; and

controlling the motor based on the signal.

11. A method of controlling a motor of a paintball loader having a feed mechanism comprising at least one moveable portion, the method comprising directly detecting movement of at least a portion of the feed mechanism and controlling the operation of the motor in response to the detection.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the detection is by a sensor.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the operation of the motor is controlled by a controller in communication with the sensor.
