Abstract

A monocular holographic storage device or system to provide for compact recording and/or reading of data pages in a holographic storage medium. Also provided are methods for carrying out such data storage and/or data recovery using a monocular holographic storage device or system. Further provided are articles including holographic storage media for recording or for reading recorded data using such devices or systems.

Claims (29)

1. A holographic device, comprising:

a beam source for generating a reference beam and a data beam;

and

an objective lens that converges the data beam generated from the beam source onto a holographic storage medium,

wherein a wavelength of the reference beam and a wavelength of the data beam are the same,

wherein the reference beam generated from the beam source, after passing through the objective lens, is incident onto the holographic storage medium as a collimated light, and

wherein, by changing an angle of the reference beam relative to the holographic storage medium, the reference beam and data beam, after passing through the objective lens, record a plurality of data pages in the holographic storage medium.

2. The holographic device of claim 1 , comprising an actuator for moving the objective lens in a direction parallel direction to the holographic storage medium,

wherein the actuator moves the objective lens in the direction parallel to the holographic storage medium to thereby change the angle of the reference beam relative to the holographic storage medium to record a plurality of data pages in accordance with angle multiplexing method.

3. The holographic device of claim 1 , comprising:

a mirror for changing an angle of an optical axis of the reference beam before the reference beam enters the objective lens; and

mirror drive means for changing an angle of the mirror,

wherein the mirror drive means drives the mirror to change an angle of the reference beam relative to the holographic storage medium to record a plurality of data pages in accordance with angular multiplexing method.

4. The holographic device of claim 1 , wherein the objective lens is mechanically moved in a direction of the axis of the objective lens to thereby adjust the focus of the objective lens.

5. The holographic device of claim 1 , wherein the reference beam and the data beam are generated from the same light source.

6. The holographic storage medium recited in claim 1 , comprising a recording material layer and a light absorbing layer for absorbing light during recording.

7. A recording method for recording data in a holographic storage medium, comprising the steps of:

generating a reference beam and a data beam;

converging the generated data beam onto the holographic storage medium by an objective lens;

directing the generated reference beam so as to be incident onto the holographic storage medium as a collimated light by the objective lens; and

changing an angle of the reference beam relative to the holographic recording medium,

wherein a wavelength of the reference beam and a wavelength of the data beam are the same, and

wherein the reference beam and the data beam, after passing through the objective lens, record a plurality of data pages in the holographic recording medium.

8. The recording method of claim 7 , further comprising the step of moving the objective lens in a direction parallel to the holographic recording medium to thereby change an angle of the reference beam relative to the holographic storage medium to record a plurality of data pages in accordance with angle multiplexing method.

9. The recording method of claim 7 , further comprising changing an angle of an optical axis of the reference beam by a mirror before the reference beam enters the objective lens

to thereby change an angle of the reference beam relative to the holographic storage medium to record a plurality of data pages in accordance with angle multiplexing method.

10. The recording method of claim 7 , further comprising compensating for a relative tilt between the holographic storage medium and the reference beam.

11. The recording method of claim 7 , further comprising compensating for a temperature change of the holographic storage medium.

12. The recording method of claim 11 , further comprising the step of changing a wavelength.
