Abstract

Apparatus and techniques relating to data interface power consumption control are disclosed. Components of a data transfer module may be selectively moved between their normal operating states and reduced power states at times when the data transfer module is not to be used for transferring data. Decisions as to particular components that are to be moved to their reduced power states may be based on respective timing characteristics of the components and/or respective power consumption characteristics of the components, for example. In some embodiments, an action may be performed to reduce a powering up time of the data transfer module when normal operation of the data transfer module is to resume. In the case of a multiple-connection interface having respective data transfer modules for each connection, the interface may be partially shut down by moving a subset of the data transfer modules into reduced power states.

Claims (48)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a multi-connection interface supporting data exchange over multiple connections; and

a controller that determines whether exchange of data over any of the multiple connections can be disabled, and, in response to a determination that exchange of data over any of the multiple connections can be disabled, disables exchange of data over one or more of the connections at the multi-connection interface, maintains at least one of the connections in an enabled state for exchange of data, and transmits control information through the enabled connection to a remote interface that is operatively coupled to the multi-connection interface through the multiple connections, the control information causing exchange of data over the one or more connections to be disabled at the remote interface.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the controller further determines when exchange of data over any of the multiple connections for which exchange of data has been disabled should be enabled, and, in response to a determination that exchange of data over any of the multiple connections for which exchange of data has been disabled should be enabled, transmits control information through the enabled connection to the remote interface and enables exchange of data at the multi-connection interface over each connection that should be enabled, the control information causing exchange of data, over each connection for which exchange of data is enabled, to be enabled at the remote interface.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , further comprising:

a respective transmitter coupled to each of the multiple connections,

wherein the transmitter for each connection that should be enabled sends a training pattern to a receiver at the remote interface.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the controller determines, based on an amount of data to be transferred to the remote interface, whether exchange of data over any of the multiple connections for which exchange of data has been disabled should be enabled, and wherein the data is transferred to the remote interface on the enabled connection without enabling any of the disabled connections where the amount of data is below a threshold.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the threshold is a single packet or a single frame of data.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the control information comprises a command.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a respective transmitter coupled to each of the multiple connections,

wherein the controller turns off the transmitter that is coupled to each of the one or more connections.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the controller disables exchange of data over a plurality of the multiple connections by moving each data transfer module of a plurality of data transfer modules respectively coupled to the plurality of connections into one of multiple reduced power states.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the multiple reduced power states comprise reduced power states which disable connections to different degrees.

10. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the reduced power states comprise a partially on state and a state in which a connection is powered down entirely.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the multiple connections operate in accordance with an Interlaken protocol that comprises a scalable protocol specification for chip-to-chip packet transfers.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the multiple connections comprise a master lane and a plurality of slave lanes, and wherein the controller maintains the master lane in the enabled state.

13. A method comprising:

determining whether exchange of data over any of multiple connections of a multi-connection interface can be disabled; and

in response to a determination that exchange of data over any of the multiple connections can be disabled:

disabling exchange of data over one or more of the connections at the multi-connection interface;

maintaining at least one of the connections in an enabled state for exchange of data; and

transmitting control information through the enabled connection to a remote interface that is operatively coupled to the multi-connection interface through the multiple connections, the control information causing exchange of data over the one or more connections to be disabled at the remote interface.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

determining when exchange of data over any of the multiple connections for which exchange of data has been disabled should be enabled; and

in response to a determination that exchange of data over any of the multiple connections for which exchange of data has been disabled should be enabled:

transmitting control information through the enabled connection to the remote interface; and

enabling exchange of data at the multi-connection interface over each connection that should be enabled,

the control information causing exchange of data, over each connection for which exchange of data is enabled, to be enabled at the remote interface.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

sending a training pattern to the remote interface on each connection that should be enabled.

16. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

determining, based on an amount of data to be transferred to the remote interface, whether exchange of data over any of the multiple connections for which exchange of data has been disabled should be enabled; and

transferring the data to the remote interface on the enabled connection without enabling any of the disabled connections where the amount of data is below a threshold.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the threshold is a single packet or a single frame of data.

18. The method of claim 13 , wherein the control information comprises a command.

19. The method of claim 13 , the disabling comprising turning off a respective transmitter that is coupled to each of the one or more connections.

20. The method of claim 13 , the disabling comprising disabling exchange of data over a plurality of the multiple connections by moving each data transfer module of a plurality of data transfer modules respectively coupled to the plurality of connections into one of multiple reduced power states.

21. The method of claim 20 , wherein the multiple reduced power states comprise reduced power states which disable connections to different degrees.

22. The method of claim 20 , wherein the reduced power states comprise a partially on state and a state in which a connection is powered down entirely.

23. The method of claim 13 , wherein the multiple connections operate in accordance with an Interlaken protocol that comprises a scalable protocol specification for chip-to-chip packet transfers.

24. The method of claim 13 , wherein the multiple connections comprise a master lane and a plurality of slave lanes, and wherein the maintaining comprises maintaining the master lane in the enabled state.

25. An apparatus comprising:

means for determining whether exchange of data over any of multiple connections of a multi-connection interface can be disabled;

means for disabling exchange of data over one or more of the connections at the multi-connection interface in response to a determination that exchange of data over any of the multiple connections can be disabled;

means for maintaining at least one of the connections in an enabled state for exchange of data; and

means for transmitting control information through the enabled connection, in response to a determination that exchange of data over any of the multiple connections can be disabled, to a remote interface that is operatively coupled to the multi-connection interface through the multiple connections, the control information causing exchange of data over the one or more connections to be disabled at the remote interface.
