Non-aqueous electrolyte and electrochemical device with an improved safety
View Patent ↗Disclosed is an electrochemical device comprising a cathode having a complex formed between a surface of a cathode active material and an aliphatic di-nitrile compound; and a non-aqueous electrolyte containing 1-10 wt % of a compound of Formula 1 or its decomposition product based on the weight of the electrolyte.
1. An electrochemical device comprising: an anode and a cathode having a complex formed between a surface of a cathode active material and 1 wt % to less than 3 wt % of an aliphatic di-nitrile compound based on the weight of a non-aqueous electrolyte; the non-aqueous electrolyte containing an aliphatic mono-nitrile compound, 1 wt % to 10 wt % of fluoroethylene carbonate based on the weight of the non-aqueous electrolyte, a lithium salt and a solvent containing at least one cyclic carbonate selected from the group consisting of ethylene carbonate (EC) and propylene carbonate (PC),
wherein the aliphatic di-nitrile compound is represented by Formula 2:
N≡C—R—C≡N [Formula 2]
wherein R is (CH 2 ) n (n is an integer of 2-12).
2. The electrochemical device of claim 1 , wherein the aliphatic di-nitrile compound is succinonitrile.
3. The electrochemical device of claim 1 , wherein the solvent further comprises at least one linear carbonate selected from the group consisting of diethyl carbonate (DEC), dimethyl carbonate (DMC), ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC) and methyl propyl carbonate (MPC).

The electrochemical device of claim 1 , wherein the complex is formed either by high-temperature treating the electrochemical device manufactured from an electrolyte containing the aliphatic di-nitrile compound added thereto, or by dipping the cathode, comprising the cathode active material coated on a collector, into the electrolyte containing the aliphatic di-nitrile compound added thereto, followed by heat treatment at high temperature.
5. The electrochemical device of claim 4 , wherein the high-temperature treatment is performed at a temperature of 30° C. to 180° C. before or after assemblage of the electrochemical device.
6. The electrochemical device of claim 1 , wherein the complex is formed by the aliphatic di-nitrile compound bonding with a transition metal in the cathode active material.
7. The electrochemical device of claim 6 , wherein the aliphatic di-nitrile compound is succinonitrile.
8. The electrochemical device of claim 6 , wherein the solvent further comprises at least one linear carbonate selected from the group consisting of diethyl carbonate (DEC), dimethyl carbonate (DMC), ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC) and methyl propyl carbonate (MPC).
9. The electrochemical device of claim 1 , wherein the amount of the dinitrile compound is from 1 wt % to 2 wt %.
10. The electrochemical device of claim 9 , wherein the complex is formed by the aliphatic di-nitrile compound bonding with a transition metal in the cathode active material.
11. The electrochemical device of claim 10 , wherein the aliphatic di-nitrile compound is succinonitrile.
12. The electrochemical device of claim 10 , wherein the solvent further comprises at least one linear carbonate selected from the group consisting of diethyl carbonate (DEC), dimethyl carbonate (DMC), ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC) and methyl propyl carbonate (MPC).
