Abstract

A self-contained, hand-held device for providing a dermatological treatment includes a device body configured to be handheld by a user; a radiation source supported in the device body, the radiation source including a beam source configured to generate an energy beam; an application end configured to be manually moved across the surface of the skin during a treatment session; electronics configured to pulse the radiation source during the treatment session such that the beam source emits pulsed energy beams to the skin; and a displacement control system including a displacement sensor configured to determine a displacement of the device relative to the skin, and electronics configured to control at least one operational parameter of the device based on the determined displacement of the device relative to the skin.

Claims (106)

1. A self-contained, hand-held device for providing a dermatological treatment, the device comprising:

a device body configured to be handheld by a user;

a radiation source supported in the device body, the radiation source including a beam source configured to generate an energy beam;

an application end configured to be manually moved across the surface of the skin during a treatment session;

electronics configured to pulse the radiation source during the treatment session such that the beam source emits pulsed energy beams to the skin; and

a displacement control system including:

a displacement sensor configured to generate signals based on an interaction with the skin; and

electronics configured to:

analyze signals from the displacement sensor to identify instances of a particular skin feature in the skin;

count the number of identified instances of the particular skin feature: and

control at least one operational parameter of the device based on the counted number of identified instances of the particular skin feature.

2. The device of claim 1 , comprising electronics configured to control at least one operational parameter of the radiation source based at least on the determined displacement of the device relative to the skin.

3. The device of claim 2 , comprising electronics configured to control a pulse frequency rate of the radiation source based at least on the determined displacement of the device relative to the skin.

4. The device of claim 2 , comprising electronics configured to control a pulse duration based at least on the determined displacement of the device relative to the skin.

5. The device of claim 2 , comprising electronics configured to stop or delay pulsing of the radiation source based at least on the determined displacement of the device relative to the skin.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein each pulsed energy beam emitted by the pulsed beam source has the same, fixed propagation path with respect to the device body.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the displacement control system is programmed to prevent or reduce the likelihood of over-treatment of a location on the skin.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the displacement control system is programmed to prevent or reduce the likelihood of treatment spots overlapping each other.

9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the displacement control system is programmed to provide a defined minimum spacing between adjacent treatment spots.

10. The device of claim 1 , wherein the displacement control system is configured to control the radiation source based on the counted number of instances of the particular skin feature.

11. The device of claim 1 , wherein the displacement control system is configured to enable the radiation source only if the counted number of instances of the particular skin feature reaches a predetermined minimum number of instances.

12. The device of claim 1 , wherein the device does not detect or determine a speed of movement of the device.

13. The device of claim 1 , wherein the displacement sensor includes a roller-based sensor.

14. The device of claim 1 , wherein the displacement sensor is a single-pixel displacement sensor.

15. The device of claim 14 , wherein the single-pixel displacement sensor is lensless.

16. The device of claim 14 , wherein the single-pixel displacement sensor includes:

a light emitter configured to deliver light toward the skin;

a light detector configured to detect light reflected and/or remitted from the skin, and generate a signal; and

control electronics for analyzing a signal from the detector.

17. The device of claim 1 , wherein the displacement sensor is a multi-pixel imaging displacement sensor.

18. The device of claim 17 , wherein the displacement sensor is a mouse-type two-dimensional imaging sensor.

19. The device of claim 1 , further including a control system for:

determining a delimiting value of a delimiting parameter for a treatment session;

monitoring the delimiting parameter during the treatment session; and

automatically terminating the treatment session upon reaching the delimiting value of the delimiting parameter.

20. The device of claim 19 , wherein the delimiting parameter comprises a total number of treatment spots for the treatment session.

21. The device of claim 19 , wherein the delimiting parameter comprises a total amount of delivered energy for the treatment session.

22. A self-contained, hand-held device for providing a dermatological treatment, the device comprising:

a device body configured to be handheld by a user;

a laser supported in the device body, the laser including a laser beam source configured to generate an energy beam;

an application end configured to be manually moved across the surface of the skin during a treatment session;

electronics configured to pulse the laser during the treatment session such that the laser beam source emits a sequence of pulsed energy beams to the skin to generate an array of treatment spots on the skin, wherein adjacent treatment spots generated on the skin are spaced apart from each other by areas of non-treated skin between the adjacent treatment spots, thereby providing a fractional treatment; and

a displacement control system including:

a displacement sensor configured to generate signals based on an interaction with the skin; and

electronics configured to:

analyze signals from the displacement sensor to identify instances of a particular skin feature in the skin;

count the number of identified instances of the particular skin feature: and

control the relative spacing of adjacent treatment spots on the skin by controlling the pulsing of the laser based on the counted number of identified instances of the particular skin feature.

23. The device of claim 22 , wherein the device includes a single laser that includes a single laser beam source.

24. The device of claim 22 , wherein the device includes a laser that includes multiple laser beam sources.

25. A self-contained, hand-held device for providing a dermatological treatment, the device comprising:

a device body configured to be handheld by a user;

a radiation source supported in the device body, the radiation source including a beam source configured to generate an energy beam;

an application end configured to be manually moved across the surface of the skin during a treatment session;

electronics configured to pulse the radiation source during the treatment session such that the beam source emits pulsed energy beams to the skin; and

a displacement control system including:

a sensor configured to generate signals based on an interaction with the skin; and

electronics configured to:

analyze signals from the sensor to identify skin features in the skin;

count the number of identified skin features; and

control at least one operational parameter of the device based on the counted number of identified skin features.

26. The device of claim 25 , wherein the device does not detect or determine a speed of movement of the device.

27. The device of claim 25 , wherein controlling at least one operational parameter of the device based on the counted number of identified skin features comprises controlling at least one operational parameter of the radiation source based on the counted number of identified skin features.

28. A self-contained, hand-held device for providing a dermatological treatment, the device comprising:

a device body configured to be handheld by a user;

a radiation source supported in the device body, the radiation source including a beam source configured to generate an energy beam;

an application end configured to be manually moved across the surface of the skin during a treatment session;

electronics configured to pulse the radiation source during the treatment session such that the beam source emits pulsed energy beams to the skin; and

a displacement control system programmed to:

automatically identify instances of a particular intrinsic skin features in the skin proximate the application end of the device;

count the number of identified instances of the particular intrinsic skin feature; and

control at least one operational parameter of the device based on the counted number of instances of the particular intrinsic skin feature.

29. The device of claim 28 , wherein the displacement control system is configured to control the radiation source to provide a defined minimum spacing between adjacent treatment spots.

30. A self-contained, hand-held device for providing a dermatological treatment, the device comprising:

a device body configured to be handheld by a user;

a radiation source supported in the device body, the radiation source including a beam source configured to generate an energy beam;

an application end configured to be manually moved across the surface of the skin during a treatment session;

electronics configured to pulse the radiation source during the treatment session such that the beam source emits pulsed energy beams to the skin; and

a single-pixel solid-state sensor configured to generate signals based on an interaction with the skin; and

electronics configured to:

analyze signals from the single-pixel solid-state sensor to identify instances of a particular skin feature;

count the number of identified instances of the particular skin feature; and

control at least one operational parameter of the device based on the counted number of identified instances of the particular skin feature.

31. The device of claim 30 , wherein the single-pixel sensor is configured to generate signals related to a displacement of the device relative to the skin.

32. The device of claim 30 , wherein the single-pixel sensor is configured to generate signals related to a speed of the device relative to the skin.

33. The device of claim 30 , wherein the single-pixel sensor is configured to generate signals indicating whether or not the device is moving relative to the skin.

34. The device of claim 30 , wherein the single-pixel sensor is configured to generate signals indicating whether or not the device is in contact with the skin.

35. The device of claim 30 , wherein the single-pixel displacement sensor includes:

a light emitter configured to deliver light toward the skin;

a light detector configured to detect light reflected and/or remitted from the skin, and generate a signal; and

control electronics for analyzing a signal from the detector.

36. The device of claim 30 , comprising electronics programmed to control the radiation source based on the counted number of instances of the particular skin feature.

37. The device of claim 30 , comprising electronics programmed to enable the radiation source only if the counted number of instances of the particular skin feature reaches a predetermined minimum number of skin features.

38. A self-contained, hand-held device for providing a dermatological treatment, the device comprising:

a device body configured to be handheld by a user;

a radiation source supported in the device body, the radiation source including a beam source configured to generate an energy beam;

an application end configured to be manually moved across the surface of the skin during a treatment session;

electronics configured to control the radiation source during the treatment session such that the beam source emits the energy beam to the skin; and

a displacement control system including:

a displacement sensor configured to generate signals based on an interaction with the skin; and

electronics configured to:

analyze signals from the displacement sensor to identify instances of a skin feature in the skin;

count the number of identified instances of the skin feature; and

control at least one operational parameter of the device based on the counted number of identified instances of the skin feature.

39. The device of claim 38 , wherein controlling at least one operational parameter of the device based on the counted number of identified instances of the particular skin feature comprises controlling at least one operational parameter of the radiation source based on the counted number of identified instances of the particular skin feature.

40. The device of claim 38 , wherein the device does not detect or determine a speed of movement of the device.
