Abstract

A method and composition for the reduction of the emission of selenium into the environment from the burning of fossil fuels with the use of two chemistries, either individually or in combination with each other. The method uses polydithiocarbamic compounds, including polydithiocarbamic compounds derived from a polymer produced from acrylic-x and alkylamine in conjunction with a scrubber process to capture selenium and reduce its emission in aqueous phase blowdown. The method and composition also helps reduce corrosion in the scrubber process.

Claims (20)

1. A scrubber liquor comprising:

water;

a calcium-containing compound selected from the group consisting of calcium carbonate, calcium oxide, and combinations thereof;

an organic acid; and

a polydithiocarbamic compound of at least one polythiocarbamic material; and selenium.

2. The scrubber liquor of claim 1 , wherein the scrubber liquor further comprises a polymer derived from at least two monomers: acrylic-x and an alkylamine, and wherein said acrylic-x has the following formula:

wherein X═OH and salts thereof or NHR 2 and wherein R 1 and R 2 is H or an alkyl or aryl group, wherein the molecular weight of said polymer is between 500 to 200,000, and wherein said polymer is modified to contain a functional group capable of scavenging at least one metal-comprising composition.

3. The scrubber liquor of claim 1 , wherein the polydithiocarbamic compound comprises 30 to 80 mole percent of dithiocarbamate salt groups.

4. The scrubber liquor of claim 1 , wherein the polydithiocarbamic compound has a molecular weight of 500 to 100,000 Da.

5. The scrubber liquor of claim 1 , wherein the scrubber liquor further comprises a transition metal salt.

6. The scrubber liquor of claim 5 , wherein the transition metal salt is a manganese salt.

7. The scrubber liquor of claim 5 , wherein the transition metal salt is an iron salt.

8. The scrubber liquor of claim 1 , wherein the polydithiocarbamic compound is a water-soluble ethylene dichloride ammonia polymer.

9. The scrubber liquor of claim 8 , wherein the water-soluble ethylene dichloride ammonia polymer has a molecular weight range of from 500 to 10,000 Daltons.

10. The scrubber liquor of claim 2 , wherein the scrubber liquor further comprises a transition metal salt.

11. The scrubber liquor of claim 10 , wherein the transition metal salt is an iron salt.

12. The scrubber liquor of claim 10 , wherein the transition metal salt is a manganese salt.

13. The scrubber liquor of claim 1 , wherein the at least one polythiocarbamic material and the selenium are present in the scrubber liquor at a weight ratio ranging from 1:1 to 2000:1.

14. The scrubber liquor of claim 1 , wherein the at least one polythiocarbamic material and the selenium are present in the scrubber liquor at a weight ratio ranging from 5:1 to 1000:1.

15. The scrubber liquor of claim 1 , wherein the at least one polythiocarbamic material and the selenium are present in the scrubber liquor at a weight ratio ranging from 5:1 to 500:1.
