Abstract

The present disclosure is directed to coalescing agent for waterborne coatings. The coalescing agent comprises low molecular weight polytrimethylene ether glycol having a Mn (number average molecular weight) in a range of from 100 to 490. This disclosure is further directed to a waterborne coating composition comprising the coalescing agent. The waterborne coating compositions can be used as interior and exterior top coats, basecoats, primers, primer surfacers and primer fillers. The waterborne coating compositions can be used as architecture coatings, automotive original equipment manufacturer (OEM) coatings, automotive refinish coatings, sports equipment coatings or any other coatings. The disclosure is particularly directed to a coating composition comprising components derived from renewable resources.

Claims (19)

1 . A waterborne coating composition comprising:

A) a polymer component comprising one or more polymers free from crosslinkable functional groups; and

B) a coalescing agent comprising a polytrimethylene ether glycol having a Mn (number average molecular weight) in a range of from 100 to 490;

wherein said waterborne coating composition comprises in a range of from 20% to 80% of water, percentage based on total weight of said waterborne coating composition, and

said waterborne coating composition is free from any crosslinking agent.

2 . The waterborne coating composition of claim 1 , wherein said one or more polymers are in particle form having particle size in a range of from 0.01 μm to 5 μm.

3 . The waterborne coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the polytrimethylene ether glycol has a Mn in a range of from 100 to 310.

4 . The waterborne coating composition of claim 1 , wherein said waterborne coating composition comprises in a range of from 0.01% to 20% of said polytrimethylene ether glycol, percentage based on total weight of said waterborne coating composition.

5 . The waterborne coating composition of claim 1 , wherein said waterborne coating composition comprises in a range of from 0.1% to 10% of said polytrimethylene ether glycol in free form, percentage based on total weight of said waterborne coating composition.

6 . The waterborne coating composition of claim 1 , wherein said polytrimethylene ether glycol comprises in a range of from 20% to 100% of trimethylene glycol dimers, percentage based on the total weight of the polytrimethylene ether glycol.

7 . The waterborne coating composition of claim 5 , wherein said trimethylene glycol dimers is polymerized from bio-derived 1,3-propanediol.

8 . The waterborne coating composition of claim 1 , wherein said coating composition comprises in a range of from 40% to 80% of water, percentage based on total weight of said waterborne coating composition.

9 . The waterborne coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the polytrimethylene ether glycol is polymerized from bio-derived 1,3-propanediol.

10 . The waterborne coating composition of claim 1 , wherein said one or more polymer particles are selected from one or more acrylic polymer particles, latex polymer particles, epoxy polymer particles, or a combination thereof.

11 . The waterborne coating composition of claim 1 further comprising one or more pigments.

12 . The waterborne coating composition of claim 1 further comprising one or more solvents, ultraviolet light stabilizers, ultraviolet light absorbers, antioxidants, hindered amine light stabilizers, leveling agents, rheological agents, thickeners, antifoaming agents, wetting agents, catalysts, or a combination thereof.

13 . The waterborne coating composition of claim 1 , wherein said waterborne coating composition forms a dry coating layer at a temperature in a range of from 15° C. to 80° C.

14 . An article comprising a substrate coated with the waterborne coating composition of claim 1 .

15 . The article of claim 14 , wherein said substrate is selected from wood, concrete, metal, plastic, glass, paper, fiber, gypsum plaster, cement, stone, rock, brick, masonry, or a combination thereof.
