Method of using punicic acid to enhance immune response and prevent metabolic disorders
View Patent ↗Disclosed is a method of enhancing the immune response of an animal, including mammals and humans, to prevent or ameliorate immunoinflammatory diseases such as Inflammatory Bowel Disease, increase immune system development, maintain or increase CD4 + and CD8 + T lymphocyte levels, increase immune function, increase immune response against viruses and prevent or ameliorate the Metabolic Syndrome, Type 2 diabetes and obesity by administering orally or parenterally a therapeutically effective amount of punicic acid to the animal.
1. A method of enhancing immune response comprising administering punicic acid to an animal in an amount effective to enhance immune response in the animal, wherein the animal is an animal undergoing a vaccination against a foreign antigen, and wherein the amount is between about 1 mg and 20 g per day.
2. The method of claim 1 wherein the animal undergoing the vaccination against the foreign antigen is administered an inactivated antigen.
3. The method of claim 1 wherein the administering the punicic acid to the animal undergoing the vaccination against the foreign antigen comprises administering the punicic acid prior to administering the foreign antigen.
4. The method of claim 1 wherein the administering enhances immune system development in the animal.
5. The method of claim 1 wherein the administering enhances development of an immune system component selected from the group consisting of a lymphoid organ and an immune cell.
6. The method of claim 1 wherein the administering enhances development of a lymphoid organ selected from the group consisting of thymus, spleen, lymph node, bronchi-associated lymphoid tissue, and gut-associated lymphoid tissue.
7. The method of claim 1 wherein the administering increases lymphocyte levels in the animal.
8. The method of claim 1 wherein the administering increases T cell levels in the animal.
9. The method of claim 1 wherein the administering increases levels of T cells selected from the group consisting of CD4 + T cells, CD8 + T cells, CD3 + T cells, and T-cell receptor αβ + T cells in the animal.
10. The method of claim 1 wherein the administering increases proliferation of lymphocytes in response to a mitogenic stimulus.
11. The method of claim 1 wherein the punicic acid is administered in free fatty acid form.
12. The method of claim 1 wherein the punicic acid is administered in glyceride form.
13. The method of claim 1 wherein the punicic acid is administered with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
14. The method of claim 13 wherein the pharmaceutically acceptable carrier is suitable for a route of administration selected from the group consisting of parenteral administration, oral administration, and rectal administration.
15. The method of claim 1 wherein the punicic acid is administered in a pharmaceutical composition, a nutritional product, a food supplement, a foodstuff, or a food composition.
16. The method of claim 15 wherein the pharmaceutical composition is administered in the form of a tablet, a capsule, a cachet, a lozenge, a solution, or an emulsion.
17. A method of enhancing immune response comprising administering in need of enhanced immune response in an amount effective to enhance immune response in the animal, wherein the animal is an animal undergoing a vaccination against a foreign antigen, and wherein the amount ranges from 10 mg/kg/day to 10,000 mg/kg/day.
18. The method of claim 1 wherein the animal in need of enhanced immune response is an animal undergoing a vaccination against a viral antigen.
19. The method of claim 17 wherein the animal in need of enhanced immune response is an animal undergoing a vaccination against a viral antigen.
