Abstract

An improved method for lowering the surface tension of coating compositions wherein a surfactant is contacted with the coating composition, wherein the improvement comprises contacting said coating composition with a surfactant having mono-substituted fluorophosphates present at greater than or equal to 50 mol % than bis-substituted phosphates and substrates treated with the coating composition.

Claims (53)

1 . An improved method for lowering the surface tension of coating compositions wherein a surfactant is contacted with said coating composition, wherein the improvement comprises contacting said coating composition with a surfactant comprising formula I and formula II

(R f AO)P(O)(O − M + ) 2   (formula I)

and (R f AO) 2 P(O)(O − M + )  (formula II)

wherein

R f is a C 1 to C 6 linear or branched perfluoroalkyl optionally interrupted by one, two or three ether oxygen atoms;

A is (CH 2 CF 2 ) m (CH 2 ) n , (CH 2 ) o SO 2 N(CH 3 )(CH 2 ) p , O(CF 2 ) q (CH 2 ) r , or OCHFCF 2 OE;

m is 0 to 4;

n, o, p, and r are each independently 2 to 20;

q is 2;

E is a C 2 to C 20 linear or branched alkyl group optionally interrupted by oxygen, sulfur, or nitrogen atoms; a cyclic alkyl group, or a C 6 to C 10 aryl group;

M is a Group I metal or an ammonium cation (NH x R 2 y ) + wherein R 2 is a C 1 to C 4 alkyl; x is 1 to 4; y is 0 to 3; and x+y is 4; and

wherein formula (I) is present at greater than or equal to 50 mol %.

2 . The method of claim 1 wherein formula I and formula II are present at a mol ratio of formula I to formula II of at least 2:1.

3 . The method of claim 1 wherein the formula I and formula II are present at a mol ratio of formula I to formula II of at least 3:1.

4 . The method of claim 1 wherein R f is O 4 to C 6 linear or branched perfluoroalkyl.

5 . The method of claim 1 wherein the coating composition is selected from the group consisting of an alkyd coating, Type I urethane coating, unsaturated polyester coating, or water-dispersed coating.

6 . The method of claim 5 wherein the coating composition is floor finish, polishing agent, floor polish, or paint.

7 . The method of claim 1 wherein the coating composition is applied to a substrate prior to contacting with the surfactant.

8 . A method of increasing contact angle of a coating composition applied to a surface comprising contacting the surface with a coating composition comprising formula I and formula II

(R f AO)P(O)(O − M + ) 2   (formula I)

and (R f AO) 2 P(O)(O − M + )  (formula II)

wherein

R f is a C 1 to C 6 linear or branched perfluoroalkyl optionally interrupted by one, two or three ether oxygen atoms;

A is (CH 2 CF 2 ) m (CH 2 ) n , (CH 2 ) o SO 2 N(CH 3 )(CH 2 ) p , O(CF 2 ) q (CH 2 ) r , or OCHFCF 2 OE;

m is 0 to 4;

n, o, p, and r are each independently 2 to 20;

q is 2;

E is a C 2 to C 20 linear or branched alkyl group optionally interrupted by oxygen, sulfur, or nitrogen atoms; a cyclic alkyl group, or a C 6 to C 10 aryl group;

M is a Group I metal or an ammonium cation (NH x R 2 y ) + wherein R 2 is a C 1 to C 4 alkyl; x is 1 to 4; y is 0 to 3; and x+y is 4; and

wherein formula (I) is present at greater than or equal to 50 mol %.

9 . The method of claim 8 wherein formula I and formula II are present at a mol ratio of formula I to formula II of at least 2:1.

10 . The method of claim 8 wherein R f is C 4 to C 6 linear or branched perfluoroalkyl.

11 . The method of claim 8 wherein the coating composition is selected from the group consisting of an alkyd coating, Type I urethane coating, unsaturated polyester coating, or water-dispersed coating.

12 . The method of claim 11 wherein the coating composition is floor finish, polishing agent, floor polish, or paint.

13 . The method of claim 8 wherein the contacting increases wetting and leveling in the coating composition.

14 . A method for imparting surface effects to substrates comprising contacting all or a portion of a surface of the substrate with a coating composition containing a surfactant comprising formula I and formula II

(R f AO)P(O)(O − M + ) 2   (formula I)

and

(R f AO) 2 P(O)(O − M + )  (formula II)

wherein

R f is a C 1 to C 6 linear or branched perfluoroalkyl optionally interrupted by one, two or three ether oxygen atoms;

A is (CH 2 CF 2 ) m (CH 2 ) n , (CH 2 ) o SO 2 N(CH 3 )(CH 2 ) p , O(CF 2 ) q (CH 2 ) r , or OCHFCF 2 OE;

m is 0 to 4;

n, o, p, and r are each independently 2 to 20;

q is 2;

E is a C 2 to C 20 linear or branched alkyl group optionally interrupted by oxygen, sulfur, or nitrogen atoms; a cyclic alkyl group, or a C 6 to C 10 aryl group;

M is a Group I metal or an ammonium cation (NH x R 2 y ) + , wherein R 2 is a C 1 to C 4 alkyl; x is 1 to 4; y is 0 to 3; and x+y is 4; and wherein formula I is present at greater than or equal to 50 mol %.

15 . The method of claim 14 wherein formula I and formula II are present at a mol ratio of formula I to formula II of at least 2:1.

16 . The method of claim 14 wherein R f is C 4 to C 6 linear or branched perfluoroalkyl.

17 . The method of claim 14 wherein the coating composition is selected from the group consisting of an alkyd coating, Type I urethane coating, unsaturated polyester coating, or water-dispersed coating.

18 . The method of claim 14 wherein the surface effect is resistance to blocking, oil repellency, or dirt pickup resistance.

19 . A coating composition treated in accordance with the method of claim 1 .

20 . A substrate treated in accordance with the method of claim 14 .
