Abstract

Devices and methods for extracting fluids from within a container scaled by a cork or septum without removal of the cork or septum or the contamination of the fluid within the container by reactive gases or liquids. Embodiments can include a needle connected to a valve connected to a source of pressurized gas for displacing the fluid. Further embodiments can comprise additional components that act to force the needle to be inserted through the cork or septum along a linear path, to aid in preventing buckling of the needle, to clamp the device to the container, to prevent expulsion of the cork or septum from the container, and to guide the needle through a specified region of the cork or septum. Various valves, pressure regulators, pressure ranges, needle geometries, gas selections are also presented. This device is particularly suited for the dispensing and preservation of wine.

Claims (18)

1. A method of extracting fluid from within a wine bottle containing wine that is sealed by a standard wine bottle cork comprising the steps of:

inserting at least one needle through the standard wine bottle cork and into the wine bottle while the wine bottle remains sealed by the cork, the at least one needle having at least one lumen and the cork sealing the wine in the wine bottle in an undisturbed state since bottling of the wine;

injecting a gas into the wine bottle through a lumen of the at least one needle to introduce pressurized gas into the wine bottle;

removing wine from the wine bottle through a lumen of the at least one needle; and

removing the at least one needle from the standard wine bottle cork without removing the cork from the wine bottle thereby allowing the cork to reseal such that passage of fluid and gas through the cork after the at least one needle is removed is prevented.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the cork is positioned in an opening of the standard wine bottle to seal the container closed, and the cork is not removed from the opening during the steps of inserting, injecting, removing fluid and removing the at least one needle.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising engaging the wine bottle proximal to the cork and restricting the cork from being expelled from the wine bottle.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of inserting includes inserting the at least one needle through a foil cover over a part of the cork such that the steps of injecting, removing wine and removing the at least one needle are performed without removing the foil.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one needle is a non-coring needle and comprises a single lumen.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising engaging the wine bottle to stabilize the at least one needle during the inserting and/or removing steps.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of injecting includes causing an increase of pressure within the container to a level higher than a surrounding atmospheric pressure.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of injecting includes regulating delivery of the gas into the wine bottle such that flow of the fluid to exit the wine bottle is enabled and a pressure in the wine bottle is limited to prevent expulsion of the cork or leakage of gas or fluid around the cork.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of inserting at least one needle includes inserting first and second needles, the step of injecting includes injecting gas through a lumen of the first needle, and the step of removing wine includes removing wine through a lumen of the second needle.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of inserting at least one needle includes inserting a first needle, the step of injecting includes injecting gas through a lumen of the first needle, and the step of removing wine includes removing wine through a lumen of the first needle.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of removing wine includes removing less than all of the fluid in the wine bottle.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the gas is non-reactive with wine.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one needle includes a single needle.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the single needle includes a single lumen.
