Abstract

There is disclosed a distributed optical fiber sensing system in which the sensor fiber comprises at least first and second waveguides used for separate sensing operations. The sensor fiber may be, for example, a double clad fiber having a monomode core and a multimode inner cladding.

Claims (21)

1. A method of distributed vibration sensing using Rayleigh backscatter within a multimode optical fibre, comprising:

coupling an interrogator to the multimode optical fibre using a double clad optical fibre having a single mode waveguide and a multimode waveguide;

receiving at the interrogator, through the single mode waveguide of the double clad optical fibre, light backscattered within the multimode optical fibre; and

detecting vibrations using the interrogator as a function of position along the multimode optical fibre from the received backscattered light.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the multimode sensor optical fibre is positioned at least partly within a well bore having a well head, and the double clad optical fibre is connected to the multimode optical fibre after it has emerged from the wellhead.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the double clad fibre is connected to the multimode optical fibre within five meters of the wellhead.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the vibrations are detected using coherent Rayleigh backscatter of light within the multimode optical fibre.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising receiving at the interrogator, through the multimode waveguide of the double clad fibre, light backscattered within the multimode optical fibre; and

detecting one or more physical parameters as a function of position along the multimode optical fibre from the backscattered light received through the multimode waveguide of the double clad fibre.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein the one or more physical parameters comprise temperature detected from the backscattered light received through the multimode waveguide of the double clad fibre.

7. A distributed optical fibre sensing system comprising:

a multimode optical fibre;

a double clad optical fibre having a single mode waveguide and a multimode waveguide; and

an interrogator coupled to the multimode optical fibre using the double clad optical fibre,

the system being arranged such that the interrogator receives, through the single mode waveguide of the double clad optical fibre, light which has been Rayleigh backscattered within the multimode optical fibre,

the interrogator being arranged to detect vibrations as a function of position along the multimode optical fibre from the received backscattered light.

8. The system of claim 7 wherein the multimode sensor optical fibre is positioned at least partly within a well bore having a well head, and the double clad optical fibre is connected to the multimode optical fibre after it has emerged from the wellhead.

9. The system of claim 8 wherein the double clad fibre is connected to the multimode optical fibre within five meters of the wellhead.

10. The system of any of claims 7 wherein interrogator is arranged to detect the vibrations using coherent Rayleigh backscatter of light within the multimode optical fibre.

11. The system of any of claims 7 further arranged such that the interrogator receives, through the multimode waveguide of the double clad fibre, light backscattered within the multimode optical fibre, and detects one or more physical parameters as a function of position along the multimode optical fibre from the backscattered light received through the multimode waveguide of the double clad fibre.

12. The system of claim 11 wherein the one or more physical parameters comprise temperature detected from the backscattered light received through the multimode waveguide of the double clad fibre.
