Abstract

An exemplary surgical stapler may include a staple holder; an anvil movably connected to the staple holder; staple forming pockets defined in a surface of the anvil; and a staple trap movable within the anvil relative to the staple forming pockets. Another exemplary surgical stapler for may include a feeder belt; staples frangibly affixed to said feeder belt; an anvil against which the staples are bent in a controlled manner by engagement with staple forming pockets defined in that anvil; and at least one finger that presses a corresponding staple within a corresponding staple forming pocket laterally with a force sufficient to hold the staple in the staple forming pocket where said staple does not engage tissue after that staple is bent.

Claims (34)

1. A surgical stapler, comprising:

a staple holder;

an anvil movably connected to said staple holder;

a plurality of staple forming pockets defined in a surface of said anvil; and

a staple trap movable within said anvil relative to said staple forming pockets, wherein the staple trap slides proximally upon relative motion apart of the staple holder and the anvil.

2. The surgical apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising at least one feeder belt from which a plurality of staples frangibly extend, said feeder belt extending into said staple holder.

3. The surgical apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said staple trap is movable within said anvil by sliding.

4. The surgical apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a cover plate affixed to said surface of said anvil.

5. The surgical stapler of claim 4 , wherein said cover plate is inset into said surface of said anvil substantially level with said surface of said anvil.

6. The surgical stapler of claim 1 , wherein said staple trap comprises at least one finger extending from a spine.

7. The surgical stapler of claim 6 , further comprising a triangular fang extending laterally from at least one said finger.

8. The surgical stapler of claim 6 , further comprising a curved fang extending laterally from at least one said finger.

9. The surgical stapler of claim 1 , wherein at least one said staple forming pocket includes at least one lateral wall, and wherein said staple trap pushes at least one said staple laterally against a corresponding said lateral wall of a corresponding said staple forming pocket.

10. The surgical stapler of claim 1 , wherein said staple trap holds both lateral sides of at least one said staple.

11. The surgical apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said staple trap is biased distally.

12. A surgical stapler for treating tissue, comprising

an end effector comprising a staple holder and an anvil pivotally connected to said staple holder, said end effector movable between an unclamped configuration and a clamped configuration;

a plurality of staple forming pockets defined in a surface of said anvil;

a staple trap slidable between first and second positions relative to said staple forming pockets;

at least one feeder belt;

a plurality of staples frangibly fixed to said feeder belt;

wherein said staple holder is actuable to deploy said staples against said anvil after said end effector is clamped to tissue;

wherein said staple trap engages said staples, and retains any said staples that miss engagement with tissue.

13. The surgical stapler of claim 12 , wherein said staple trap is fixed to a portion of said anvil proximal to said staple holder, wherein relative rotation of said staple holder and anvil causes the proximal end of said staple holder to engage said staple trap and cause it to slide proximally.

14. The surgical stapler of claim 12 , wherein said staple trap comprises at least one finger extending from a spine, and wherein at least one said finger is biased against a corresponding said staple to press it against a wall of a corresponding said pocket.

15. The surgical stapler of claim 14 , further comprising a fang extending laterally from at least one said finger.

16. The surgical stapler of claim 12 , further comprising a cover plate fixed to said surface of said anvil.

17. The surgical stapler of claim 12 , wherein said staple trap engages a plurality of said staples before separation of said plurality of said staples from said feeder belt.

18. A surgical stapler for treating tissue, comprising

a feeder belt;

a plurality of staples frangibly affixed to said feeder belt;

an anvil against which said staples are bent in a controlled manner by engagement with staple forming pockets defined in said anvil; and

at least one finger that presses a corresponding said staple within a corresponding said staple forming pocket laterally with a force sufficient to hold said staple in said staple forming pocket where said staple does not engage tissue after said staple is bent.

19. The surgical stapler of claim 18 , wherein said at least one finger is biased toward said corresponding said staple and slidable longitudinally relative to said plurality of staples.
