Abstract

An access disconnection method includes supporting a transmitter including a wireless communication apparatus, a receiver, a portion of an arterial line, a portion of a venous line and electronic circuitry by a member separate from a blood treatment machine. The method further includes operably communicating the electronic circuitry with the transmitter and the receiver, enabling transmission of a wave from the transmitter in one of the arterial and venous lines, enabling receipt of the wave by the receiver in the other of the arterial and venous lines, and enabling a disconnection output to be sent to the blood treatment machine via the electronic circuitry. The disconnection output is indicative of a change in the wave received by the receiver from the transmitter sufficient to expect that an access site disconnection of one of the arterial and venous lines has occurred.

Claims (41)

1. An access disconnection method for a blood treatment machine comprising:

supporting (i) a transmitter including a wireless communication apparatus, (ii) a receiver, (iii) a portion of an arterial line, (iv) a portion of a venous line and (v) electronic circuitry by a member separate from the blood treatment machine;

operably communicating the electronic circuitry with the transmitter and the receiver;

enabling transmission of a wave from the transmitter in one of the arterial or venous lines;

enabling receipt of the wave by the receiver in the other of the arterial or venous lines; and

enabling a disconnection output to be sent to the blood treatment machine via the electronic circuitry, wherein the disconnection output is indicative of a change in the wave received by the receiver from the transmitter sufficient to expect that an access site disconnection of one of the arterial or venous lines has occurred.

2. The access disconnection method of claim 1 , which includes, in response to receiving the disconnection output, performing at least one of (i) shutting down a blood pump at the blood treatment machine, (ii) activating a venous line clamp at the blood treatment machine, and (iii) alerting the patient.

3. The access disconnection method of claim 1 , wherein transmission of the wave includes a transmission of the type selected from the group consisting of: sonic, ultrasonic, subsonic, pressure, single frequency, multiple frequencies, continuous, pulsed, modulated in amplitude, modulated in frequency, modulated in phase and any suitable combinations thereof.

4. The access disconnection method of claim 1 , wherein the transmitter and the receiver are of at least one type selected from the group consisting of: a single transducer, multiple transducers, piezoelectric, and electromagnetic.

5. The access disconnection method of claim 1 , wherein sending the disconnection output includes sending one of: an electrical output, a radio frequency output, a continuous output, an intermittent output or an output occurring upon the change.

6. The access disconnection method of claim 1 , which includes providing a redundancy that combines the transmitter, the receiver and the electronic circuitry with one of: (i) optical blood leak detection, (ii) capacitive sensing detection and (iii) conductive blanket detector.

7. The access disconnection method of claim 1 , which includes actively disallowing the wave from traveling from the transmitter, through a blood pump of the blood treatment unit, to the receiver, so that the wave travels through the access site instead.

8. An access disconnection method for a blood treatment machine comprising:

supporting a transmitter, a receiver, a wireless communication apparatus and a portion of one of an arterial line or a venous line via a member separate from the blood treatment machine;

enabling transmission of a wave from the transmitter through one of the arterial or venous lines;

enabling receipt of the wave by the receiver in the other of the arterial or venous lines, and

enabling a wireless disconnection output to be sent from the wireless communication apparatus to the blood treatment machine, wherein the disconnection output is indicative of a change in the wave received by the receiver from the transmitter sufficient to expect that an access site disconnection of one of the arterial or venous lines has occurred.

9. The access disconnection method of claim 8 , which includes, in response to receiving the disconnection output, performing at least one of (i) shutting down a blood pump at the blood treatment machine, (ii) activating a venous line clamp at the blood treatment machine, and (iii) alerting the patient.

10. The access disconnection method of claim 8 , wherein the member is a board, and which includes positioning the transmitter, the receiver, the wireless communication apparatus and a portion of one of the arterial or venous lines on the board.

11. The access disconnection method of claim 8 , which includes supporting portions of both the arterial and venous lines by the member.

12. The access disconnection method of claim 8 , which includes actively disallowing the wave from traveling from the transmitter, through a blood pump of the blood treatment unit, to the receiver, so that the wave travels through the access site instead.

13. The access disconnection method of claim 8 , wherein the wave is a reflected sound or ultrasound wave, and the change is a change in a signature response produced by the reflected sound or ultrasound wave.

14. The access disconnection method of claim 8 , which includes providing a redundancy that combines the transmission with one of (i) optical blood leak detection, (ii) capacitive sensing detection and (iii) conductive blanket detection.

15. An access disconnection method for a blood treatment machine comprising:

supporting a transmitter, a receiver and a portion of one of an arterial line or a venous line via a member separate from the blood treatment machine;

enabling generation of a wave from the transmitter into one of the arterial line or the venous line;

enabling receipt of the wave by the receiver in the arterial line or the venous line;

enabling development of a characteristic pattern for the wave; and

enabling a disconnection output signal to be sent to the blood treatment machine, the disconnection output signal indicative of a change in the characteristic pattern, which is sufficient to expect that an access site disconnection of the arterial line or the venous line has occurred.

16. The access disconnection method of claim 15 , which includes supporting portions of both the arterial and venous lines via the member.

17. The access disconnection method of claim 15 , which includes supporting electronic circuitry via the member and configuring the electronic circuitry to send the disconnection output signal to the blood treatment machine.

18. The access disconnection method of claim 15 , wherein the transmission and the receipt is performed in the venous line.

19. The access disconnection method of claim 15 , wherein the transmission and the receipt is performed in the same one of the arterial and venous lines.

20. The access disconnection method of claim 19 , wherein enabling generation of the wave includes reflecting the wave.

21. The access disconnection method of claim 15 , wherein enabling receipt of the wave includes enabling receipt of a reflected wave.

22. An access disconnection method for a blood treatment machine comprising:

supporting (i) a transmitter, (ii) a receiver, (iii) a portion of an arterial line, (iv) a portion of a venous line and (v) electronic circuitry by a member separate from the blood treatment machine;

operably communicating the electronic circuitry with the transmitter and the receiver;

enabling transmission of a wave from the transmitter in one of the arterial line or the venous line;

enabling receipt of the wave by the receiver in said one of the arterial line or the venous line; and

enabling a disconnection output to be sent to the blood treatment machine via the electronic circuitry, wherein the disconnection output is indicative of a change in the wave received by the receiver from the transmitter sufficient to expect that an access site disconnection of said one of the arterial line or the venous line has occurred.
