Abstract

The present invention is intended to permit both real-time display of a picture represented by a non-compressed video signal on a television and display of a picture represented by a compressed video signal at any desired time by simultaneously transmitting the compressed video signal and non-compressed video signal via one interface. An STB packetizes a compressed video signal, and multiplexes the compressed video signal and a blanking signal combined with a non-compressed video signal. Thus, both the video signals are transmitted simultaneously. A picture represented by the non-compressed video signal is displayed on a television in real time. The compressed video signal is stored in a storage medium incorporated in the television, read at any user's desired time, and decoded so that a picture represented by the compressed video signal can be viewed at the user's desired time.

Claims (34)

1 . A video signal transmission method comprising the step of:

using a decoder to decode a compressed video signal received by a video signal processing system, and produce a non-compressed video signal;

combining a compressed video signal with a blanking signal combined with the produced non-compressed video signal to produce a multiplex video signal; and

transmitting the multiplex video signal from the video signal processing system.

2 . A video signal transmission method comprising the steps of:

allowing a video signal processing system to combine a compressed video signal that is packetized with a non-compressed video signal that includes sync signals and that is not packetized to produce a multiplex video signal; and

transmitting the multiplex video signal from the video signal processing system.

3 . The video signal transmission method according to claim 2 , wherein the compressed video signal carries a transport stream or a program stream, one packet is divided into a plurality of packets, and an identification number is appended to the head of each of the divisional packets.

4 . The video signal transmission method according to claim 2 , wherein if an error occurs in a packet included in the multiplex video signal, the error-stricken packet is designated and a retransmission request is issued to the video signal processing system over a communication channel linked to the video signal processing system.

5 . The video signal transmission method according to claim 2 , wherein the header of a packet or the payload contained therein includes a copy flag different from the one included in the non-compressed video signal.

6 . A video processing system comprising:

an input unit configured to receive a multiplex video signal produced by combining a compressed video signal with a non-compressed video signal that is not packetized;

a demultiplexer configured to separate that multiplex video signal received by the input unit into the non-compressed video signal and compressed video signal; and

a display unit configured to display a picture represented by the non-compressed video signal separated by the demultiplexer.

7 . The video processing system according to claim 6 , further comprising a video storage medium configured to store the compressed video signal separated by the demultiplexer.

8 . The video processing system according to claim 6 , wherein a first picture represented by a video signal produced by decoding the compressed video signal previously included in the multiplex video signal, and a second picture represented by the non-compressed video signal previously included in the multiplex video signal, are separately displayed as two screen pictures on the display unit.

9 . A video processing system according to claim 6 , further comprising an output unit configured to transmit the compressed video signal, previously separated by the demultiplexer, to outside the system.

10 . The video processing system according to claim 7 , further comprising:

a digital tuner configured to receive a digital television signal which includes a compressed video signal; and

a decoder configured to decode the compressed video signal received by the digital tuner;

wherein the decoder is also configured to decode the compressed video signal read from the video storage medium.

11 . The video processing system according to claim 7 , further comprising:

a code converter configured to change one code applied to the compressed video signal stored in the storage medium into another code; and

a transmission unit configured to transmit the video signal, which has previously had the applied code changed into another code by the code converter, to an external system.

12 . A video signal processing system comprising:

a decoder configured to decode a received compressed video signal so as to produce a non-compressed video signal;

a video signal multiplexer configured to combine the compressed video signal with the non-compressed video signal produced by the decoder; and

a transmission unit configured to transmit the video signal produced by the video signal multiplexer.

13 . A video signal processing system comprising:

a decoder configured to decode a compressed video signal received via an interface so as to produce a non-compressed video signal; and

a transmission unit configured to return, via the interface, the non-compressed video signal produced by the decoder.

14 . A video signal processing system comprising:

an interface configured to transmit the received or stored compressed video signal; and

a display unit configured to display a picture represented by a non-compressed video signal received via the interface.
