Abstract

An apparatus for communicating health care data from a sender to a receiver is provided. The apparatus has a first computer system, a second computer system, and a rules engine. The first computer system has health care data stored therein. The second computer system is in operable communication with, and is configured to extract the health care data from, the first computer system. The rules engine normalizes the extracted health care data to a predefined format.

Claims (35)

1. A computer system for transmitting healthcare data from a provider, the computer system comprising:

a server in communication with a healthcare provider computer system and one or more healthcare payor computer systems;

wherein the server is configured to receive uploaded healthcare data of a first patient from the healthcare provider computer system;

wherein communication between the server and the healthcare provider computer system is over the Internet;

wherein the healthcare data configured to be received by the server is configured to be converted into a normalized format by a normalization system, wherein the normalized format is of a type that displays healthcare data from one or more sources such that any healthcare data having the same meaning will be expressed in the same format despite any prior formatting;

wherein the normalization system includes: a rules engine that is configured to predetermine how each of the healthcare data is to appear in its respective field, and configured to remodel any of the healthcare data not expressed as predetermined by the normalized format into the normalized format to become normalized data such that all normalized data that expresses information having the same meaning is expressed in the same format;

wherein the one or more payor computer systems are configured to receive healthcare data from a plurality of patients through the server; and

wherein the server is configured to transfer the healthcare data of the first patient between the provider computer system and one of the one or more healthcare payor computers.

2. The computer system of claim 1 , wherein the server is configured to transfer data related to the healthcare data of the first patient from the one of the one or more healthcare payor computer systems to the provider computer system.

3. The computer system of claim 1 , wherein the server is configured to transfer data of a second patient from the provider computer system to a second of the one or more healthcare payor systems.

4. The computer system of claim 2 , wherein the server is configured to transfer the normalized data between the provider computer system and the one of the one or more healthcare payor computer system is of a type that is selected from a group consisting of eligibility, benefits, and referral.

5. The computer system of claim 1 , wherein the server is configured to transfer data related to the healthcare data of the first patient from the one of the one or more healthcare payor computer systems to the provider computer system; wherein the healthcare data is selected from a group consisting of status of claim and explanation of benefits.

6. A computer system for transmitting healthcare data from a provider, the computer system comprising:

a server in communication with a healthcare provider computer system and one or more healthcare payor computer systems;

wherein the server is configured to receive uploaded healthcare claims data of a first patient from the healthcare provider computer system;

wherein communication between the server and the healthcare provider computer system is over the Internet;

wherein the healthcare claims data configured to be received by the server is configured to be converted into a normalized format by a normalization system, wherein the normalized format is of a type that displays healthcare claims data from one or more sources such that any healthcare claims data having the same meaning will be expressed in the same format despite any prior formatting;

wherein the normalization system includes: a rules engine that is configured to predetermine how each of the healthcare claims data is to appear in its respective field, and configured to remodel any of the healthcare claims data not expressed as predetermined by the normalized format into the normalized format to become normalized claims data such that all normalized claims data that expresses information having the same meaning is expressed in the same format;

wherein the one or more payor computer systems are configured to receive healthcare claims data from a plurality of patients through the server; and

wherein the server is configured to transfer the healthcare claims data of the first patient between the provider computer system and one of the one or more healthcare payor computers.

7. The computer system of claim 6 , wherein the server is configured to transfer data related to the healthcare data of the first patient from the one of the one or more healthcare payor computer systems to the provider computer system.

8. The computer system of claim 6 , wherein the server is configured to transfer data of a second patient from the provider computer system to a second of the one or more healthcare payor systems.

9. The computer system of claim 6 , wherein the server is configured to transfer the normalized claims data between the provider computer system and the one of the one or more healthcare payor computer systems is of a type that is selected from a group consisting of referral status of claim and explanation of benefits.

10. A computer system for transmitting healthcare data from a provider, the computer system comprising:

a server in communication with a healthcare provider computer system and one or more healthcare payor computer systems;

wherein the server is configured to receive uploaded healthcare claims data of a first patient from the healthcare provider computer system;

wherein communication between the server and the healthcare provider computer system is over the Internet;

wherein the healthcare claims data is configured to be received by the server from the healthcare provider computer system and configured to be converted into a normalized format by a normalization system, wherein the normalized format is of a type that displays healthcare claims data from one or more sources such that any healthcare claims data having the same meaning will be expressed in the same format despite any prior formatting;

wherein the normalization system includes: a rules engine that is configured to predetermine how each of the healthcare claims data is to appear in its respective field, and configured to remodel any of the healthcare claims data not expressed as predetermined by the normalized format into the normalized format to become normalized claims data such that all normalized claims data that expresses information having the same meaning is expressed in the same format;

wherein the one or more payor computer systems are configured to receive healthcare claims data from a plurality of patients through the server;

wherein the server is configured to transfer the normalized claims data of the first patient to one of the one or more healthcare payor computers; and

wherein the normalized claims data is available to be adjudicated.

11. The computer system of claim 10 , wherein the provider computer system is configured to transfer healthcare claims data of a second patient to the server.

12. The computer system of claim 10 , wherein the server is configured to transfer the normalized claims data between the provider computer system and the one of the one or more payor computer systems is of a type that is selected from a group consisting of referral status of claim and explanation of benefits.

13. The computer system of claim 10 , wherein the server is configured to transfer the normalized claims data to the payor computer system to be adjudicated; and wherein the server is further configured to receive payment or explanation of benefits from the one of the one or more payor computer systems and transfer the payment or explanation of benefits to the provider.
