Abstract

A surgical access device, such as a trocar, includes a pendent valve having an elongate structure extending from a proximal end to a septum valve disposed at a distal end. In operation, the elongate structure follows the angle of the instrument to pre-position the septum valve into the path of the instrument where it is not significantly challenged during instrument insertion or manipulation. The pendant valve can be made to float at both the proximal end and the distal end of the elongate structure, to further reduce the vulnerability of the septum valve. Since the valve is less vulnerable to instrument insertion, it can be formed to minimize friction and maximize the functional range of the access device.

Claims (29)

1. A surgical access device having a working channel with a working channel axis adapted to receive a surgical instrument having an instrument axis, the surgical access device comprising:

a valve housing including a side wall and an end wall;

a valve module, flexibly coupled to the valve housing, the valve module comprising:

an elongate tube having a proximal end and a distal end, the proximal end of the elongate tube flexibly coupled to the valve housing such that the distal end of the elongate tube is free to pendulate within the valve housing; and

a septum seal disposed at the distal end of the elongate tube; and

a guiding structure positioned within the valve housing distal of the septum seal, the guiding structure defined by a duckbill valve fixed to the valve housing.

2. The surgical access device of claim 1 , wherein the valve module is solely coupled to the end wall of the valve housing.

3. The surgical access device of claim 2 , wherein the end wall is selectively removable from the valve housing with the valve module remaining with the end wall.

4. The surgical access device of claim 3 , wherein the duckbill valve is fixed to the side wall of the valve housing such that the duckbill valve remains with the side wall when the end wall is removed.

5. The surgical access device of claim 1 , wherein the guiding structure tends to align the instrument axis of the surgical instrument received in the working channel with the working channel axis.

6. The surgical access device of claim 1 , wherein the distal end of the elongate tube is free to pendulate about three orthogonal axes.

7. The surgical access device of claim 1 , wherein the septum seal comprises a frusto-conical shaped seal member.

8. The surgical access device of claim 1 , wherein the duckbill valve comprises a double duckbill valve.

9. A surgical access device having a working channel adapted to receive a surgical instrument, the surgical access device comprising:

a valve housing including a side wall and an end wall; and

a valve module, flexibly coupled to the valve housing, the valve module comprising:

an elongate tube having a proximal end and a distal end, the elongate tube flexibly coupled to the valve housing at a point between the proximal end and the distal end such that the proximal end of the elongate tube and the distal end of the elongate tube are free to pendulate within the valve housing;

a septum seal positioned on the elongate tube; and

a zero seal disposed on the elongate tube distal of the septum seal.

10. The surgical access device of claim 9 , wherein the valve housing comprises a support fixed to the side wall of the housing, the support flexibly coupling the valve module to the valve housing.

11. The surgical access device of claim 10 , wherein the support comprises a flange coupled to the side wall of the housing and extending radially inward.

12. The surgical access device of claim 10 , wherein the support comprises a first flange and and a second flange extending radially inwardly from the side wall of the housing.

13. The surgical access device of claim 12 , wherein the first flange and the second flange are positioned in a generally parallel relationship such that they define an annular recess therebetween.

14. The surgical access device of claim 13 , wherein the valve module comprises an annular projection positioned within the annular recess defined by the first and second flanges of the support to flexibly couple the valve module to the valve housing.

15. The surgical access device of claim 14 , wherein the annular projection of the valve module is movable within the annular recess of the support about two orthogonal axes.

16. The surgical access device of claim 9 , wherein the valve module comprises a first seal member positioned within a second seal member.

17. The surgical access device of claim 16 , wherein the first seal member includes the septum seal.

18. The surgical access device of claim 16 , wherein the second seal member includes the zero seal.

19. The surgical access device of claim 16 , wherein the first seal member comprises an annular bead, the second seal member comprises an annular groove, and the annular bead is positioned within the annular groove when the first seal member is positioned within the second seal member.
