Abstract

Methods and apparatus to identify exposure to three dimensional media presentations are disclosed. An example method includes detecting a first brightness level with a first sensor and a second brightness level with a second sensor at a first time. A third brightness level is detected with the first sensor and a fourth brightness level is detected with the second sensor at a second time later than the first time. A 3D media counter is incremented when either: the first brightness is greater than the second brightness and the third brightness is less than the fourth brightness, or the first brightness is less than the second brightness and the third brightness is greater than the fourth brightness. The media is identified as 3D media when the 3D media counter exceeds a threshold.

Claims (34)

1. A method of detecting a presentation format of media, the method comprising:

attempting to intercept a 3D control signal;

determining, with a processor, whether the 3D control signal is received, the 3D control signal to instruct a 3D viewing device to shutter a lens of the 3D viewing device;

identifying the presentation format as a 3D format when the 3D control signal is received;

identifying the presentation format as a 2D format when the 3D control signal is not received;

storing the identified presentation format;

collecting a media identifier; and

storing the media identifier in connection with the stored identified presentation format.

2. The method as described in claim 1 , wherein the 3D control signal is an infrared signal.

3. The method as described in claim 1 , further comprising timestamping the presentation format.

4. The method as described in claim 1 , further comprising transmitting the stored indication to a central facility.

5. The method as described in claim 4 , wherein transmitting the stored indication includes electronically transmitting the stored indication.

6. The method as described in claim 1 , wherein shuttering the lens of the 3D viewing device comprises preventing image transmission through the lens.

7. An apparatus to identify a format of media, the apparatus comprising:

a 3D display sensor to intercept a 3D control signal, the 3D control signal to instruct a 3D viewing device to shutter a lens of the 3D viewing device;

an identifier to identify the media; and

a processor to store an indication of the format of the media as 2D media or 3D media, by a computer in a data store based on whether the 3D control signal is intercepted by the 3D display sensor, the processor to store an association of the identified media with the indication of the format of the media in the data store.

8. The apparatus as described in claim 7 , further comprising a data communicator to transmit the association of the identified media with the indication of 3D media.

9. The apparatus as described in claim 7 , wherein the 3D display sensor is an infrared receiver.

10. The apparatus as described in claim 7 , wherein the 3D display sensor wirelessly communicates with the audience measurement processor.

11. The apparatus as described in claim 7 , further comprising a timestamper to timestamp the indication.

12. The apparatus as described in claim 7 , wherein the 3D viewing device is to shutter the lens by preventing image transmission through the lens.

13. A tangible machine-readable storage medium comprising instructions which, when executed cause a machine to at least:

attempt to intercept a 3D control signal;

determine whether the 3D control signal is received, the 3D control signal to instruct a 3D viewing device to shutter a lens of the 3D viewing device;

identify the presentation format as a 3D format when the 3D control signal is received;

identify the presentation format as a 2D format when the 3D control signal is not received;

store the identified presentation format;

identify the media; and

store the identification of the media in connection with the stored identified presentation format.

14. The machine-readable medium as described in claim 13 , wherein the 3D control signal is an infrared signal.

15. The machine-readable medium as described in claim 14 , further storing instructions which when executed cause the machine to timestamp the presentation format.

16. The machine-readable medium as described in claim 13 , further storing instructions which when executed cause the machine to transmit the stored indication to a central facility.

17. The machine-readable medium as described in claim 13 , wherein shuttering the lens of the 3D viewing device comprises preventing image transmission through the lens.
