Abstract

A method for driving a plasma display panel having at least three electrodes. The method includes applying a first pulse having a voltage changing with time in a positive direction and a second pulse having a voltage changing with time in a negative direction to a second main electrode in an address preparation period. The method also includes applying a scan pulse to the second main electrode in an address period. The method also includes at least one of the first and second pulses in the address preparation period has a stepwise waveform whose voltage rise or fall stepwise.

Claims (16)

1 . A method for driving a plasma display panel having at least three electrodes including a pair of a first main electrode and a second main electrode disposed on every line of a screen, and an address electrode disposed on every column of the screen, the method comprising:

applying a first pulse having a voltage difference between the first and second main electrodes changing with time in an address preparation period; and

applying a scan pulse to the second main electrode in an address period, the first pulse in the address preparation period having a resultant voltage being applied as a difference between a voltage being applied to the second main electrode as a gentle or ramp waveform with negative polarity and a voltage being applied to the first main electrode as an auxiliary waveform with positive polarity,

wherein a feeble discharge is generated successively in a period of the first pulse.

2 . The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

applying a second pulse having a voltage difference between the first and second main electrodes changing with time in opposite polarity to the first pulse before applying the first pulse.

3 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein the auxiliary waveform is a rectangular waveform.

4 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein the voltage difference applied as the first pulse has a waveform whose voltage changes quickly within such a range that a discharge does not occur, and then changes gradually to a predetermined voltage.

5 . A method for driving a plasma display panel having at least three electrodes including a pair of a first main electrode and a second main electrode disposed on every line of a screen, and an address electrode disposed on every column of the screen, the method comprising:

applying a first pulse having a voltage difference between the first and second main electrodes changing with time in an address preparation period; and

applying a scan pulse to the second main electrode in an address period, the first pulse in the address preparation period having a resultant voltage being applied as a difference between a voltage being applied to the second main electrode as a stepwise waveform with negative polarity and a voltage being applied to the first main electrode as an auxiliary waveform with positive polarity,

wherein feeble discharges are generated in plural steps of the stepwise waveform.

6 . The method according to claim 5 , further comprising:

applying a second pulse having a voltage difference between the first and second main electrodes changing with time in opposite polarity to the first pulse before applying the first pulse.

7 . The method according to claim 5 , wherein the auxiliary waveform is a rectangular waveform.

8 . The method according to claim 5 , wherein the voltage difference applied as the first pulse has a waveform whose voltage changes quickly within such a range that a discharge does not occur, and then changes gradually to a predetermined voltage.
