Abstract

A display device includes a display unit in which pixels having first and second regions are arrayed in a matrix, the first region emitting first color light for displaying a stereoscopic image including images of a plurality of viewing points and the second region emitting second color light in order to display the stereoscopic image. A separation unit separates optically the images of the respective viewing points from each other so that the images of different viewing points are observed by different eyes of a viewer, wherein in a region on the display unit in which the image of a predetermined viewing point is displayed, widths of the first and second regions in a parallax direction of the stereoscopic image are approximately the same and widths of the first and second regions in a vertical direction, which is approximately perpendicular to the parallax direction, are different.

Claims (25)

1. A display device comprising:

a display unit including a plurality of pixels arranged in a matrix, each of the pixels including a first region, a second region, and a third region that are not shared with the other pixels, the first, second and third regions in each pixel being arrayed in one column in a vertical direction substantially perpendicular to a parallax direction, the first region emitting red color light for displaying a stereoscopic image including images of a plurality of viewing points, the second region emitting green color light for displaying the stereoscopic image, and the third region emitting blue color light for displaying the stereoscopic image; and

a parallax barrier that separates optically the images of the respective viewing points from each other so that the images of different viewing points are observed by different eyes of a viewer, the parallax barrier having a slit region through which light is transmitted, and a light shielding region for blocking light, the slit region and the light shielding region extending in the vertical direction and being arranged alternately in the parallax direction,

wherein in a region on the display unit in which the image of a predetermined viewing point observed by the viewer is displayed, widths of the first, second and third regions in a parallax direction of each pixel are approximately the same,

wherein, in each pixel, the width of the third region in the vertical direction is greater than the width of the first region in the vertical direction and greater than the width of the second region in the vertical direction,

wherein, in each pixel, the first region is not adjacent to the second region and the third region in the parallax direction, the second region is not adjacent to the first region and the third region in the parallax direction, and the third region is not adjacent to the first region and the second region in the parallax direction,

wherein the first region includes a first light shielding section configured to block light and that is provided in a first filter, through which the red color light is transmitted, on the pixel,

wherein the first light shielding section is provided at a substantially center portion of the first region in the vertical direction,

wherein the second region includes a second light shielding section configured to block light and that is provided in a second filter, through which the green color light is transmitted, on the pixel, and

wherein the second light shielding section is provided at a substantially center portion of the second region in the vertical direction.

2. The display device according to claim 1 ,

wherein a plurality of first regions and a plurality of second regions are arrayed in the vertical direction and are provided in each pixel, and

in a region on the display unit in which the image of a predetermined viewing point observed by the viewer is displayed, the width of the third region in the vertical direction of each pixel is greater than a sum of the widths of the plurality of first regions in the vertical direction of each pixel and a sum of the widths of the plurality of second regions in the vertical direction of each pixel.

3. The display device according to claim 1 ,

wherein in the display unit, wiring lines of the display unit are provided between the first region and the second region along one edge, which is long in the parallax direction, of each of the first region and the second region, and wiring lines of the display unit are provided between the second region and the third region along one edge, which is long in the parallax direction, of each of the second region and the third region.

4. A display device comprising:

a display unit including a plurality of pixels arranged in a matrix, each of the pixels including a first region, a second region, and a third region that are not shared with the other pixels, the first, second, and third regions in each pixel being arrayed in one column in a second direction crossing a first direction, the first region emitting red color light for displaying a viewing point image, the second region emitting green color light for displaying the viewing point image, and the third region emitting blue color light for displaying the viewing point image; and

a parallax barrier that separates optically the plurality of viewing point images arrayed in the first direction, the parallax barrier having a slit region through which light is transmitted, and a light shielding region for blocking light, the slit region and the light shielding region extending in the second direction and being arranged alternately in the first direction,

wherein widths of the first, second, and third regions in the first direction of each pixel are approximately the same,

wherein, in each pixel, the width of the third region in the second direction is greater than the width of the first region in the second direction and greater than the width of the second region in the second direction,

wherein, in each pixel, the first region is not adjacent to the second region and the third region in the first direction, the second region is not adjacent to the first region and the third region in the first direction, and the third region is not adjacent to the first region and the second region in the first direction,

wherein the first region includes a first light shielding section configured to block light and that is provided in a first filter, through which the red color light is transmitted, on the pixel,

wherein the first light shielding section is provided at a substantially center portion of the first region for in the vertical direction,

wherein the second region includes a second light shielding section configured to block light and that is provided in a second filter, through which the green color light is transmitted, on the pixel, and

wherein the second light shielding section is provided at a substantially center portion of the second region in the vertical direction.
