Abstract

A device for introduction into a body in a straight configuration and assuming within the body a predefined curved configuration, includes an elongated element formed from a number of segments interconnected so as to form effective hinges therebetween. When the elongated element is confined to a straight state, the effective hinges transfer compressive forces from each segment to the next so that the elongated element can be pushed to advance it through a conduit. When the elongated element is not confined to a straight state, the effective hinges allow deflection of each segment relative to adjacent segments until abutment surfaces of the segments come into abutment, thereby defining a fully flexed state of the elongated element with a predefined curved configuration. The device can be produced with a wide range of two-dimensional and three-dimensional curved forms, and has both medical and non-medical applications.

Claims (24)

1. An orthopedic implant for deployment via a guide by being advanced by a pusher element, the orthopedic implant comprising:

at least two segments interconnected by a resilient element so as to be biased to a curved state, said resilient element being fixedly attached to, or integrally formed with, said segments,

said resilient element being elastically deformable so that the at least two segments temporarily assume a straightened configuration when engaged with the guide,

the orthopedic implant being configured such that, when advanced by the pusher element to emerge from the guide, the orthopedic implant deploys laterally relative to a length of the conduit and assumes said curved state.

2. The orthopedic implant of claim 1 , further comprising a guide configured for restraining the orthopedic implant in said straightened configuration.

3. The orthopedic implant of claim 2 , wherein said guide comprises two parallel walls spaced so that, when said implant is deployed between said walls, said at least two segments are restricted to said straightened configuration.

4. The orthopedic implant of claim 2 , wherein said guide is implemented as a conduit sized and shaped to be close-fitting around said at least two segments in said straightened configuration.

5. The orthopedic implant of claim 2 , wherein said guide is implemented as a conduit with a substantially rectangular cross-sectional shape.

6. The orthopedic implant of claim 2 , wherein said guide comprises a rail extending within hollow portions of said at least two segments.

7. The orthopedic implant of claim 1 , wherein said resilient element is integrally formed with said at least two segments.

8. A method comprising the steps of:

(a) providing the orthopedic implant of claim 1 ; and

(b) introducing the orthopedic implant into a human body along a guide so as to deploy the orthopedic implant between two vertebral bodies.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein said orthopedic implant is introduced within an intervertebral disc so as to serve as a disc reinforcement.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein said orthopedic implant is deployed to maintain a given intervertebral spacing.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein said orthopedic implant defines an internal volume, the method further comprising introducing into said internal volume a quantity of a biocompatible filler.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein said biocompatible filler comprises a material selected from the group consisting of: bone, bone derivatives and osteo-inductive agents for promoting bone growth.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein said biocompatible filler comprises a material selected from the group consisting of: antibiotics, anti-neoplastic agents and anti-mitotic agents.

14. A method comprising the steps of:

(a) providing the orthopedic implant of claim 1 ; and

(b) introducing the orthopedic implant into a human body along a guide so as to deploy the orthopedic implant within a vertebral body.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein said orthopedic implant defines an internal volume, the method further comprising introducing into said internal volume a quantity of a biocompatible filler.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein said biocompatible filler comprises a material selected from the group consisting of: bone, bone derivatives and osteo-inductive agents for promoting bone growth.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein said biocompatible filler comprises a material selected from the group consisting of: antibiotics, anti-neoplastic agents and anti-mitotic agents.
