Abstract

An automated banking machine operates to cause financial transfers responsive to data read from data bearing records, such as user cards. The machine includes sensing devices adjacent a card reader slot. The sensing devices enable the machine controller to detect the presence of unauthorized card reading devices. Servicing the machine is facilitated through use of a portable diagnostic article. The article enables access to diagnostic data stored in machine memory. The article also provides data indicative of the significance of the diagnostic data.

Claims (74)

1. A method comprising:

(a) operating at least one computer of an automated banking machine to cause to be sent to at least one remote computer, status data corresponding to at least one condition of at least one device of the machine,

wherein the machine includes at least one input device,

wherein the at least one input device includes at least one data reader,

wherein the at least one data reader is operative to read machine user data usable to identify a financial account with which a transaction can be carried out through use of the machine,

wherein the machine includes a cash dispenser device,

wherein the cash dispenser device is operable to selectively dispense cash stored in the machine to authorized machine users,

wherein the machine includes at least one data store,

wherein the at least one computer is in operative connection with the at least one data reader, the cash dispenser device, and the at least one data store,

wherein the at least one computer is operative to cause a transaction to be carried out on a financial account for a machine user, based at least in part on

machine user data read by the at least one data reader corresponding to the financial account, and

the machine user being recognized as an authorized user of the machine;

(b) operating the at least one computer to receive from the at least one remote computer, analysis information that is based on analysis of the status data sent in (a);

(c) operating at least one computer to cause the information received in (b) to be stored in the at least one data store;

(d) subsequent to (c), operating the at least one computer to receive through the at least one input device, at least one input from a service entity located at the machine,

wherein the at least one input includes machine service authorization; and

(e) operating the at least one computer responsive at least in part to the at least one input received in (d), to cause the information stored in (c) to be output to the service entity,

wherein the information indicates at least one particular device of the machine,

wherein the information includes at least one remedial action to be performed by the service entity to avoid a future malfunction of the at least one particular device.

2. The method according to claim 1 wherein the machine is part of a banking system,

wherein the at least one data reader includes both

a card reader, and

a biometric reader,

and further comprising:

(f) operating the at least one computer to cause card data to be read from a card through operation of the card reader, and then cause the read card data to be compared with card information stored in at least one information data store; and

(g) operating the at least one computer to cause biometric data to be read through operation of the biometric reader, and then cause the read biometric data to be compared with biometric information in the at least one information data store;

wherein the at least one computer is operable during a user transaction session with the machine to cause the cash dispenser to dispense cash responsive at least in part to both

computer-determined correspondence between the card data read in (f) and stored card information, and

computer-determined correspondence between the biometric data read in (g) and stored biometric information.

3. The method according to claim 1 wherein the information includes instructions on how to perform the at least one remedial action, and further comprising:

(f) operating the at least one computer to cause the machine to receive from the service entity, malfunction preventive service that corresponds to the instructions.

4. The method according to claim 1 wherein the machine includes at least one display device,

wherein (e) includes operating at least one computer to cause the at least one display device to output indicia corresponding to the information.

5. The method according to claim 1 wherein (d) includes operating the at least one computer to wirelessly receive the at least one input from a portable device.

6. The method according to claim 5 wherein (e) includes operating at least one computer to cause the information to be wirelessly sent to the portable device.

7. The method according to claim 1 wherein (b) includes operating the at least one computer to receive analysis information from the at least one remote computer on a periodic basis.

8. The method according to claim 7 wherein (a) includes operating at least one computer to cause status data to be sent to the at least one remote computer on a periodic basis which is shorter than the periodic basis in (b).

9. The method according to claim 1 and further comprising:

(f) providing by the service entity while located at the machine, the at least one remedial action.

10. The method according to claim 1 wherein in (a) and (b) the at least one remote computer includes at least one service center computer that is operable to analyze status data for a plurality of automated banking machines.

11. A method comprising:

(a) operating an automated banking machine to send machine status data to at least one status data analyzing computer located remotely from the machine,

wherein the machine includes at least one output device,

wherein the machine includes at least one input device,

wherein the at least one input device includes at least one data reader,

wherein the at least one data reader is operative to read machine user data usable to identify a financial account with which a transaction can be carried out through use of the machine,

wherein the machine includes a cash dispenser,

wherein the cash dispenser is operable to selectively dispense cash stored in the machine to authorized machine users;

(b) subsequent to (a), operating the machine to receive from the at least one status data analyzing computer, instructions that correspond to at least one remedial action that needs to be performed on at least one operable component of the machine that is statistically operationally trending toward a near malfunction;

(c) subsequent to (b), operating the machine to receive through the at least one input device, at least one input from an authorized service person located on site of the machine; and

(d) operating the machine responsive at least in part to the at least one input received in (c), to cause the at least one output device to provide the instructions to the authorized service person.

12. The method according to claim 11 wherein the machine is part of a banking system, and further comprising:

(e) operating the machine to cause user data to be read by the at least one data reader,

wherein the machine is operable during a user transaction session to cause the cash dispenser to dispense cash responsive at least in part to computer-determined correspondence between the user data read in (e) and stored user information.

13. The method according to claim 11 wherein the at least one output device includes at least one display,

wherein (d) includes operating machine to cause the at least one display to output indicia corresponding to the instructions.

14. The method according to claim 11 wherein (c) includes operating the at least one input device to wirelessly receive the at least one input from a portable device.

15. The method according to claim 14 wherein (d) includes operating at least one output device to cause the information to be wirelessly sent to the portable device.

16. The method according to claim 11 wherein (a) and (b) occur while the authorized service person is not located on site of the machine.

17. A method comprising:

(a) operating an automated banking machine to send status data to at least one remote computer located remotely from the machine,

wherein the machine includes at least one input device,

wherein the at least one input device includes at least one data reader,

wherein the at least one data reader is operative to read machine user data usable to identify a financial account with which a transaction can be carried out through use of the machine,

wherein the machine includes a cash dispenser,

wherein the cash dispenser is operable to selectively dispense cash stored in the machine to authorized machine users;

(b) subsequent to (a), operating the machine to receive from the at least one remote computer, information corresponding to at least one servicing action to be performed by an on-site service person to prevent predicted failure of at least one functional machine component based on the status data sent in (a);

(c) subsequent to (b), operating the machine to receive through the at least one input device, at least one input from an authorized service person; and

(d) operating the machine responsive at least in part to the at least one input received in (c), to make the information accessible to the authorized service person;

wherein the authorized service person is located on site of the machine in (c) and (d) but not in (a) and (b).

18. The method according to claim 17 wherein the machine includes at least one display, wherein (d) includes displaying the information through the at least one display.

19. The method according to claim 17 wherein (d) includes operating the machine to wirelessly send the information to a portable device of the authorized service person.

20. The method according to claim 17 and further comprising:

(e) operating the machine to receive the at least one servicing action from the authorized service person.
