Polymer compositions having improved EMI retention
Polymer compositions having improved electromagnetic (EMI) shielding properties under high temperature are disclosed. The polymer compositions comprise a thermoplastic polymer, stainless steel fiber, and optionally one or more of glass fiber, a conductive filler, a second polymer, and other additives. The disclosed compositions maintain heat resistance and other mechanical properties under high temperatures.
1. A polymer composition comprising:
from about 20 wt. % to about 50 wt. % of a thermoplastic polymer;
from about 5 wt. % to about 30 wt. % of a coated fiber;
wherein the coated fiber comprises about 75 wt. % of a stainless steel fiber, about 9.25 wt. % of a polyester material coating and about 15.75 wt. % of a polysulfone coating.
2. The polymer composition of claim 1 , wherein the thermoplastic polymer is semi-crystalline.
3. The polymer composition of claim 1 , wherein the thermoplastic polymer comprises a polybutylene terephthalate, nylon, or a combination thereof.
4. The polymer composition of claim 1 , wherein the thermoplastic polymer comprises polybutylene terephthalate.
5. The polymer composition of claim 1 , wherein the thermoplastic polymer has an intrinsic viscosity ranging from about 0.5 to about 1.5.
6. The polymer composition of claim 1 , wherein the thermoplastic polymer comprises two or more of polybutylene terephthalate, polyphthalamide, or nylon, wherein at least two of the polybutylene terephthalate, polyphthalamide, or nylon have a different intrinsic viscosity.
7. The polymer composition of claim 1 , capable of retaining at least about 80% of the initial electromagnetic interference after annealing at about 150° C. for at least about 120 hours.
