Abstract

Disclosed herein are methods, compositions and tools for repairing articular surfaces repair materials and for repairing an articular surface. The articular surface repairs are customizable or highly selectable by patient and geared toward providing optimal fit and function. The surgical tools are designed to be customizable or highly selectable by patient to increase the speed, accuracy and simplicity of performing total or partial arthroplasty.

Claims (24)

1. A surgical system including an articular repair system and a surgical instrument for use in surgically repairing a joint of a patient, comprising:

a mold having an internal surface that substantially conforms to a shape of a cartilage surface of the joint of the patient; and

one or more drill hole guides configured to guide a surgical drill, wherein the one or more drill hole guides include anatomical information of the joint to facilitate the placement of the articular repair system when the internal surface of the mold is aligned with and substantially conforms to the shape of the cartilage surface of the joint.

2. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the articular repair system includes one or more implant components selected for the patient from preexisting systems.

3. The surgical system of claim 2 , wherein the selected one or more implant components are further shaped based on electronic image data of the joint of the patient.

4. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the articular repair system includes one or more implant components designed for the patient using electronic image data of the joint of the patient.

5. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the joint is one of a hip, knee, ankle, shoulder, elbow and wrist joint.

6. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the anatomical information is information regarding an axis of the joint of the patient.

7. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the anatomical information is information regarding a femoral shaft or femoral neck axis of the patient.

8. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the anatomical information is information regarding a femoral condyle axis of the patient.

9. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the anatomical information is information regarding a tibial axis of the patient.

10. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the anatomical information is information regarding a deformity of the joint of the patient.

11. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the anatomical information is information regarding an alignment of the joint of the patient.

12. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the joint is a knee joint of the patient, wherein the anatomical information is information regarding a varus or valgus alignment of the knee joint of the patient.

13. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the anatomical information is information regarding an articular alignment of the joint of the patient.

14. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the anatomical information is information regarding another joint of the patient.

15. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the joint is a knee joint of the patient, wherein the one or more drill hole guides define a tibial implant and/or femoral implant rotation.

16. The surgical system of claim 1 , further comprising an adjustment mechanism to provide a rotational motion of the surgical drill.

17. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the internal surface includes information regarding an estimated cartilage thickness of the joint of the patient.

18. The surgical system of claim 1 including two or more drill hole guides, wherein the two or more drill hole guides are substantially parallel.

19. The surgical system of claim 1 , further comprising a cutting block.

20. A surgical system including an articular repair system having one or more implant components and a surgical instrument for use in surgically repairing a hip joint of a patient, wherein the surgical instrument comprises:

a mold having an internal surface that substantially conforms to the shape of a cartilage surface of the hip joint of the patient; and

one or more drill hole guides configured to guide a surgical drill, wherein the one or more drill hole guides include axis information and anatomical information of the hip joint to facilitate the placement of an articular repair system when the internal surface of the mold is aligned with and substantially conforms to the shape of the cartilage surface of the hip joint.
