Abstract

A prosthetic component suitable for long-term implantation is provided. The prosthetic component includes electronic circuitry and sensors to measure a parameter of the muscular-skeletal system. The prosthetic component comprises a first structure having at least one support surface, a second structure having at least one feature configured to couple to bone. The electronic circuitry and sensors are hermetically sealed within the prosthetic component. Sensors can be used to monitor synovial fluid in proximity to the joint to determine joint health. The prosthetic component can include a temperature sensor or a pH sensor. The temperature or pH of the synovial fluid can be correlated to a variety of joint conditions. Measurements over time can be analyzed for trends. The temperature or pH can be calibrated for the patient. For example, calibration can be for temperature or pH of a patient healthy joint. The measurements are compared against this patient reference.

Claims (31)

1. A prosthetic component comprising:

a temperature sensor: and

electronic circuitry coupled to the temperature sensor where the electronic circuitry is housed in the prosthetic component and where the temperature sensor and electronic circuitry is configured to measure temperature in proximity to the prosthetic component.

2. The prosthetic component of claim 1 where the electronic circuitry is configured to periodically measure temperature of synovial fluid.

3. The prosthetic component of claim 2 where the electronic circuitry is configured to calibrate to a temperature of a healthy joint.

4. The prosthetic component of claim 3 where the temperature sensor comprises one of a MEMS sensor, a thermocouple, or thermistor.

5. The prosthetic component of claim 4 where the electronic circuitry is configured to send temperature data to a remote system.

6. The prosthetic component of claim 5 where the remote system is configured to receive and analyze data from the prosthetic component.

7. The prosthetic component of claim 6 where the prosthetic component includes at least one load sensor coupled to the electronic circuitry.

8. The prosthetic component of claim 7 where the prosthetic component includes one of a pH sensor or an optical sensor coupled to the electronic circuitry.

9. A prosthetic component comprising

a pH sensor; and

electronic circuitry coupled to the pH sensor where the electronic circuitry is housed in the prosthetic component and where the pH sensor and electronic circuitry is configured to measure pH in proximity to the prosthetic component.

10. The prosthetic component of claim 9 where the electronic circuitry is configured to periodically measure pH of synovial fluid.

11. The prosthetic component of claim 10 where the electronic circuitry is configured to calibrate to a pH of a healthy joint.

12. The prosthetic component of claim 11 where the pH sensor comprises one of a MEMS pH sensor, an implantable pH Sensor, or an electro-static pH sensor.

13. The prosthetic component of claim 12 where the electronic circuitry is configured to send pH data to a remote system.

14. The prosthetic component of claim 13 where the prosthetic component includes at least one load sensor coupled to the electronic circuitry.

15. The prosthetic component of claim 14 where the prosthetic component includes one of a temperature sensor or an optical sensor coupled to the electronic circuitry.

16. A method of long-term joint monitoring comprising the steps of:

housing electronic circuitry and one or more sensors in a prosthetic component;

periodically monitoring synovial fluid in proximity to the prosthetic component;

measuring a characteristic of the synovial fluid; and

sending data to a remote system.

17. The method of claim 16 further including the steps of:

analyzing the data;

generating a report; and

sending the report to at least one entity.

18. The method of claim 17 further including a step of measuring temperature of the synovial fluid.

19. The method of claim 17 further including a step of measuring pH of the synovial fluid.

20. The method of claim 17 further including a step of measuring color or turbidity of the synovial fluid.
