Abstract

The invention provides the ability to evaluate transaction activity of customers following the redemption of a promotion, such as the redemption of a prepaid instrument, coupon, or the like. For example, the subsequent activity could be where customers shopped after redeeming a coupon. Examples of such reports that could be generated include the percentage of redeemers who returned to the same merchant or who went elsewhere. In some cases, customers could do both, or neither and the reports could indicate such activity. Further reports could show the amount spent for each return visit (both for those who return and go elsewhere), as well as the percentage who shop only with the merchant, and nowhere else.

Claims (72)

1. A computerized method for calculating the effectiveness of a promotion offered by a promotional merchant in retaining customers, the method comprising:

receiving at a computer system transaction data from a plurality of point of sale terminals, wherein the transaction data comprises data obtained when performing transactions at the point of sale terminals, wherein the transaction data for each transaction comprises a merchant identifier, a transaction amount, and a customer account identifier, and wherein at least some of the transactions further comprise a promotional identifier that is associated with a promotion that is being offered by the promotional merchant;

determining by the computer system a set of transactions comprising transactions that were made using the same account identifiers that were previously used while performing transactions made using the promotional identifier;

comparing the merchant identifiers to see if they are the same or different from the merchant identifier of the promotional merchant;

generating a data file with the computer system that is used to generate a report showing where customers made subsequent transactions following the transactions involving the promotional identifiers, wherein the report indicates whether the subsequent transactions were made at the promotional merchant or at other merchants;

determining with the computer system whether the other merchants are similarly situated to the promotional merchant;

wherein the report illustrates a percentage of customers who performed transactions at the promotional merchant and at merchants similarly situated to the promotional merchant following transactions involving the promotional identifiers.

2. A method as in claim 1 , wherein the similarly situated merchants are identified based on the merchant identifiers that have the same goods or services classification as the merchant identifier of the promotional merchant.

3. A method as in claim 1 , wherein the report illustrates the average amount spent for each transaction at the promotional merchant and the average amount spent for each transaction at merchants similarly situated to the promotional merchant following transactions involving the promotional identifiers.

4. A method as in claim 1 , wherein the report illustrates the percentage of customers having subsequent transactions with the promotional merchant but not with any of the similarly situated merchants.

5. A method as in claim 1 , wherein the report illustrates the percentage of customers having subsequent transactions with both the promotional merchant as well as with a total of the similarly situated merchants.

6. A system for reporting the effectiveness of a promotion offered by a promotional merchant in retaining customers according to point-of-sale (POS) data, the system comprising:

an aggregation subsystem, communicatively coupled with a POS network comprising a plurality of POS terminals, and configured to aggregate POS datasets from the plurality of POS terminals, each POS terminal being configured to collect transaction data as a function of transactions effectuated via the POS terminal, wherein the transaction data comprises a merchant identifier for each of the merchants, a customer account identifier, and a transaction amount for each transaction involving the merchants, wherein one of the merchants comprises a promotion merchant that is offering a promotion involving transactions made with the merchant, and wherein at least some of the transaction data further comprises a promotional identifier that is associated with the promotion;
