Abstract

An electronic device may be operable to communicate over a physical medium and to regulate the transmission of a message onto the physical medium. The device may access the medium in accordance with a CSMA scheme, wherein one or more values of one or more CSMA parameters may be determined based on the result of a comparison of a received search token to data stored in the communication device. The message may be a response to a received request message, and the search token may have been received in the request message. A value of the CSMA parameter(s) may be determined based on the result of a comparison of the score and one or more thresholds. The threshold(s) may have been received in the request message. The value(s) of the CSMA parameter(s) may be determined based on one or more initial values contained in the received request message.

Claims (40)

1. A method comprising:

in a first electronic device comprising a communication interface for communicating over a physical medium:

receiving a search message from a second electronic device via said communication interface, wherein said search message comprises a user-entered search string and a similarity threshold;

comparing data in memory of said first electronic device to said user-entered search string to determine an amount of similarity between said data in said memory of said first electronic device and said user-entered search string;

determining not to respond to said search message when said amount of similarity is below said similarity threshold;

generating a response message when said amount of similarity is above said similarity threshold;

setting a value of a CSMA parameter to be used for transmission of said response message based on said amount of similarity, wherein said set value of said CSMA parameter is a first value when said amount of similarity is a first amount and is a second value when said amount of similarity is a second amount; and

transmitting said response message onto said physical medium using said set value of said CSMA parameter.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

said search message contains an initial value of said CSMA parameter; and

said setting of said value of said CSMA parameter is based on said initial value of said CSMA parameter contained in said search message.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said CSMA parameter is an amount of time that said first electronic device attempts to access said physical medium when transmitting said response message.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein an equation utilized for determining said amount of time is selected from a plurality of equations based on said amount of similarity.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein a relatively-higher amount of similarity between said data in said memory of said first electronic device and said user-entered search string results in said amount of time being relatively higher, and a relatively-lower amount of similarity between said data in said memory of said first electronic device and said user-entered search string results in said amount of time being relatively lower.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein said CSMA parameter is an amount of time that said physical medium must be free before transmission of said response message onto said physical medium.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein a relatively-higher amount of similarity between said data in said memory of said first electronic device and said user-entered search string results in said amount of time being relatively lower, and a relatively-lower amount of similarity between said data in said memory of said first electronic device and said user-entered search string results in said amount of time being relatively higher.

8. A system comprising:

a first electronic device comprising a communication interface for communicating over a physical medium, said first electronic device being operable to:

receive a search message from a second electronic device via said communication interface, wherein said search message comprises a user-entered search string, and a similarity threshold;

compare data in memory of said first electronic device to said user-entered search string to determine an amount of similarity between said data in said memory of said first electronic device and said user-entered search string;

determine not to respond to said search message when said amount of similarity is below said similarity threshold;

generate a response message when said amount of similarity is above said similarity threshold;

set a value of a CSMA parameter to be used for transmitting said response message based on said amount of similarity, such that said value of said CSMA parameter is set to a first value when said amount of similarity is a first amount and set to a second value when said amount of similarity is a second amount; and

transmit said response message onto said physical medium using said set value of said CSMA parameter.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein:

said search message contains an initial value of said CSMA parameter; and

said set of said value of said CSMA parameter is based on said initial value of said CSMA parameter contained in said search message.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein said CSMA parameter is an amount of time that said first electronic device attempts to access said physical medium when transmitting said response message.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein an equation utilized for determining said amount of time is selected from a plurality of equations based on said amount of similarity.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein a relatively-higher amount of similarity between said data in said memory of said first electronic device and said user-entered search string results in said amount of time being relatively higher, and a relatively-lower amount of similarity between said data in said memory of said first electronic device and said user-entered search string results in said amount of time being relatively lower.

13. The system of claim 8 , wherein said CSMA parameter is an amount of time that said physical medium must be free before transmission of said response message onto said physical medium.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein a relatively-higher amount of similarity between said data in said memory of said first electronic device and said search string results in said amount of time being relatively lower, and a relatively-lower amount of similarity between said data in said memory of said first electronic device and said search string results in said amount of time being relatively higher.

15. A method performed by a first communication device which communicates over a shared communication medium, the method comprising:

receiving a search message from a second communication device via said communication medium, wherein said search message comprises a user-entered search string, and a similarity threshold;

comparing said data in said memory of said first communication device to said user-entered search string to determine an amount of similarity between said data in said memory of said first communication device and said user-entered search string;

determining not to respond to said search message when said amount of similarity is below said similarity threshold;

generating a response message when said amount of similarity is above said similarity threshold,

setting a value of a timing parameter to be used for transmitting said response message based on said amount of similarity, wherein said set value of said CSMA parameter is a first value when said amount of similarity is a first amount and is a second value when said amount of similarity is a second amount; and

deciding when to transmit said response message onto said shared communication medium based on detected activity on said shared communication medium and based on said set value of said timing parameter.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein said timing parameter is an amount of time after said first communication device receives said search message that said first communication device can begin transmitting said response message.
