Abstract

Methods and devices for selectively presenting a user interface or “desktop” across two devices are provided. More particularly, a unified desktop is presented across a device and a computer system. The unified desktop acts as a single user interface that presents data and receives user interaction in a seamless environment. The unified desktop can present notifications for both the computer system and the device in the unified desktop. Thus, regardless of the origin of the notification, the notification may be presented on the unified desktop on the device user interface and/or the computer system user interface.

Claims (51)

1 . A method, comprising:

connecting a device to a computer system to form a unified system;

generating a unified desktop for the unified system, wherein the unified desktop includes a first user interface associated with the device and a second user interface associated with the computer system;

determining one or more status indicators to display in the unified desktop; and

providing the one or more status indicators in the unified desktop.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein a first status indicator is associated with the device.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein a second status indicator is associated with the computer system.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein both the first status indicator and the second status indicator are displayed in a same portion of the first user interface or second user interface.

5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the first status indicator includes one of a wireless fidelity indicator, a Bluetooth indicator, a network traffic indicator, a signal strength indicator, a battery indicator, a Global Positioning System (GPS) indicator, a synchronization indicator, an alarm, a no Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) warning, a speakerphone indicator, a roaming warning, or a TTY indicator.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the second indicator includes one of a volume indicator, a monitor indicator, a keyboard indicator, a time, a date, or a power indicator.

7 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a selection of one of the one or more status indicators; and

providing information associated with the status indicator.

8 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising providing a user interface device that may be selected by a user.

9 . The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

receiving a selection of the user interface device; and

in response to receiving the selection of the user interface device, providing a menu associated with the status indicator.

10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the user modifies a function of the device or the computer system by interaction with the menu.

11 . A unified system, comprising:

a computer system comprising:

a first screen;

a processor;

a memory

a device comprising:

a second screen;

a second memory;

a second processor;

wherein when the computer system and the device are connected to form the unified system, the device is operable to:

provide a unified desktop over both the first screen and the second screen; and

provide at least a portion of the unified desktop to display two or more status indicators, wherein a first status indicator is associated with the device and a second status indicator is associated with the computer system.

12 . The device of claim 11 , wherein the portion of the unified desktop is displayed in either the first or second screen.

13 . The device of claim 12 , wherein the first status indicator includes one of a wireless fidelity indicator, a Bluetooth indicator, a network traffic indicator, a signal strength indicator, a battery indicator, a Global Positioning System (GPS) indicator, a synchronization indicator, an alarm, a no Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) warning, a speakerphone indicator, a roaming warning, or a TTY indicator.

14 . The device of claim 13 , wherein the second indicator includes one of a volume indicator, a monitor indicator, a keyboard indicator, a time, a date, or a power indicator.

15 . The device of claim 14 , wherein the device is further operable to:

receive a selection of one of the two or more status indicators;

in response to receiving the selection of the status indicator, provide a user interface device that may be selected by a user;

receive a selection of the user interface device; and

in response to receiving the selection of the user interface device, providing a menu associated with the status indicator, wherein the user modifies a function of the device or the computer system by interaction with the menu.

16 . A computer readable medium having stored thereon computer-executable instructions, the computer executable instructions causing a processor to execute a method for providing a unified desktop, the computer-executable instructions comprising:

instructions to connect a device to a computer system to form a unified system;

instructions to generate the unified desktop for the unified system, wherein the unified desktop includes a first user screen associated with the device and a second user screen associated with the computer system;

instructions to determine two or more status indicators to display in the unified desktop;

instructions to provide the two or more status indicators in the unified desktop;

receive a selection of one of the two or more status indicators;

in response to receiving the selection of the status indicator, provide a user interface device that may be selected by a user;

receive a selection of the user interface device; and

in response to receiving the selection of the user interface device, providing a menu associated with the status indicator, wherein the user modifies a function of the device or the computer system by interaction with the menu.

17 . The computer readable medium of claim 16 , wherein a first status indicator is associated with the device and a second status indicator is associated with the computer system.

18 . The computer readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the two or more status indicators are displayed in a portion of the unified desktop, and wherein the portion of the unified desktop is displayed in either the first or second screen.

19 . The computer readable medium of claim 18 , wherein the first status indicator includes one of a wireless fidelity indicator, a Bluetooth indicator, a network traffic indicator, a signal strength indicator, a battery indicator, a Global Positioning System (GPS) indicator, a synchronization indicator, an alarm, a no Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) warning, a speakerphone indicator, a roaming warning, or a TTY indicator.

20 . The computer readable medium of claim 19 , wherein the second indicator includes one of a volume indicator, a monitor indicator, a keyboard indicator, a time, a date, or a power indicator.
