Abstract

Tools and methods are provided for removing biological units from a body surface utilizing a removal tool. The tools may incorporate retention members and mechanisms configured to impede movement of the biological unit in the direction of a distal end of the tool and to improve retention of the biological unit in the tool. Some of the retention members are stationary and some are movable within the lumen of the biological unit removal tools. The distal tips of the tools are desirably configured to reduce the chance of transection of a biological unit, such as by including both cutting segments and blunt relief segments. A number of dual concentric tube embodiments permit a division of removal functions. Distal fluid or gas delivery may be used to help separating biological units from surrounding tissue.

Claims (41)

1. A method of harvesting hair grafts from a donor area, comprising:

advancing an elongated body around a follicular unit in the donor area, the elongated body having a lumen sized to receive the follicular unit and a distal tip;

receiving at least a portion of the follicular unit within the lumen of the elongated body as the elongated body advances into the donor area;

delivering a fluid under pressure to the distal tip of the elongated body through a plurality of channels extending longitudinally and externally with respect to the elongated body to assist in separating the follicular unit from a connective tissue that pulls it back into the donor area without rotating the elongated body; and

withdrawing the elongated body to facilitate harvesting of the follicular unit from the donor area.

2. The method of claim 1 , comprising removing the follicular unit from the donor area for transplantation into a recipient area.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of longitudinally extending channels each opens at a port located close to the distal tip of the elongated body.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the port is a side port.

5. The method of claim 1 , comprising severing the follicular unit from the connective tissue using supplied fluid under pressure.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method is substantially automated.

7. The method of claim 1 , comprising keeping the follicular unit moist and lubricated by providing irrigation at the distal end or the tool.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the elongated body comprises an inner elongated body and an outer elongated body concentrically positioned relative to the inner elongated body.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of longitudinally extending channels are defined within a conduit that is mounted along a wall of the respective outer elongated body or the inner elongated body.

10. The method of claim 8 , further comprising rotating the inner and/or the outer elongated body off an axis relative to the other to cause the respective elongated body to wobble.

11. The method of claim 1 , comprises advancing a second elongated body concentrically relative to the elongated body at a different speed than the advancement of the elongated body.

12. The method of claim 1 , comprising delivering the fluid to up to ten (10) ports.

13. The method of claim 1 , comprising moving the elongated body and actuating a fluid dispensing subsystem using one or more computer-controlled mechanisms.

14. The method of claim 1 , comprising monitoring operation of the elongated body and/or delivery of the fluid with a use of a visualization subsystem and transmitting the monitored information to a display.

15. The method of claim 1 , further comprising additionally rotating the elongated body to facilitate the removal of the follicular unit.

16. A method of harvesting hair grafts from a donor area, comprising:

advancing an inner elongated body around a follicular unit in the donor area, the inner elongated body having a lumen sized to receive the follicular unit and a distal tip;

advancing an outer elongated body concentrically positioned relative to the inner elongated body around the follicular unit in the donor area, the outer elongated body having a lumen and a distal tip;

assisting in separating the follicular unit from a connective tissue that pulls it back into the donor area, by supplying a fluid under pressure to the distal tip of the outer or the inner elongated body, wherein the fluid is supplied through a plurality of channels extending longitudinally and externally with respect to the inner and/or the outer elongated body; and

withdrawing the inner and outer elongated bodies to remove the follicular unit from the donor area;

wherein the inner and outer elongated bodies are advanced and/or withdrawn at different velocities.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the plurality of channels extend between the inner and outer elongated bodies, and the fluid is supplied through ports which open near the distal tip of the inner elongated body.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein the plurality of channels comprise separate conduits or built-in channels.

19. The method of claim 16 , wherein the fluid is supplied under a pressure of between 0.1 and 10.0 psi.

20. The method of claim 16 , further comprising rotating the inner and/or outer elongated body about its axis while advancing.

21. The method of claim 16 , further comprising advancing a grasper out of the distal end of the inner elongated body to envelop the follicular unit.

22. The method of claim 21 , further comprising causing the grasper to close and firmly engage the follicular unit.

23. The method of claim 16 , further comprising applying suction within the lumen of the inner elongated body or between the inner and outer elongated body.

24. The method of claim 16 , wherein the method is implemented by a robotically-assisted system and device.

25. A method of harvesting hair grafts from a donor area, comprising:

advancing an elongated body around a follicular unit in the donor area, the elongated body having a lumen sized to receive the follicular unit and a distal tip;

receiving at least a portion of the follicular unit within the lumen of the elongated body as the elongated body advances into the donor area;

delivering a fluid under pressure to the distal tip of the elongated body through a plurality of channels extending longitudinally and externally with respect to the elongated body to assist in separating the follicular unit from a connective tissue that pulls it back into the donor area, wherein each of the plurality of channels opens at a side port located proximal of the distal tip of the elongated body; and

withdrawing the elongated body to facilitate harvesting of the follicular unit from the donor area.

26. The method of claim 25 , wherein the plurality of channels comprising separate conduits.

27. The method of claim 25 , further comprising rotating the elongated body.

28. The method of claim 25 , comprising delivering fluid through the plurality of channels which further continue axially through a side wall of the elongated body and open at the side ports.
