Abstract

The invention provides body absorable, mechanically hemostatic putty compositions comprising carboxymethyl cellulose and one or more of polyhydroxy compounds, fatty acids, and esters thereof for use in controlling the bleeding of bone.

Claims (22)

- 293 . (canceled)

. A body-absorbable, mechanically hemostatic putty composition comprising Components 1 and 2 wherein Component 1 is carboxymethyl cellulose and Component 2 comprises one or more compounds selected from polyhydroxy compounds, esters of polyhydroxy compounds, fatty acids, esters of fatty acids, and mixtures of the foregoing, wherein Component 1 is 5-80% by weight of the final composition and Component 2 is 10-70% by weight of the final composition.

. The composition of claim 294 , wherein Component 2 comprises one or more polyhydroxy compounds, esters of polyhydroxy compounds, or mixtures thereof.

. The composition of claim 295 , wherein the one or more polyhydroxy compounds is a polyalkylene glycol.

. The composition of claim 296 , wherein the polyalkylene glycol is a polyethylene glycol.

. The composition of claim 294 , wherein Component 2 comprises a fatty acid ester.

. The composition of claim 298 , wherein the composition further comprises a tocopherol.

. The composition of claim 299 , wherein the composition further comprises a block copolymer of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide.

. The composition of claim 300 , wherein the composition further comprises a liquefying agent selected from a solvent or heat.

. The composition of claim 294 or 298 , further comprising one or more components selected from demineralized bone matrix, a bone morphogenic protein, osteonectin, osteocalcin, osteogenin, mineralized bone matrix, hydroxyapatite, and bioactive glasses.

. The composition of claim 302 , wherein the one or more components have a particle size in the range of about 0.05 to 10 millimeters.

. The composition of claim 294 or 298 , wherein the composition is sterile,

. The composition of claim 294 or 298 , further comprising an anti-infective agent or a colorant, or both.

. The composition of claim 2 . 94 or 298 , wherein Component 1 is 20-50% of the composition by weight.

. A package comprising the composition of claim 294 or 298 .

. The package of claim 307 , wherein the composition is sterile.

. The package of claim 307 , wherein the package is sterile or sterilizable.

. The package of claim 307 , wherein the composition is in an amorphous form or in a generally rounded form, or in a generally parallelepiped form.

. The package of claim 307 , wherein the package comprises a syringe-like or plunger-assisted dispenser containing the composition whereby said composition is expellable from said dispenser by the application of mechanical pressure applied to the plunger.

. The package of claim 307 , wherein the package comprises a squeezable, deformable tube containing the composition having an openable exit port whereby said composition is expellable from. said tube by the application of mechanical pressure thereto.

. The package of claim 307 , wherein the package comprises an outer barrier to allow aaseptic delivery of the package into a sterile field.

. A method for mechanically controlling the bleeding of bone which comprises applying an effective amount of the composition of claim 294 or 298 to the affected area,
