Abstract

A vehicle body structure includes a roof ditch and an elongated molding member. The roof ditch is defined by a recessed support surface and first and second wall surfaces extending longitudinally along opposite sides of the recessed support surface. The molding member includes a plurality of roof attachment portions securing the molding member longitudinally along the roof ditch. The molding member includes a top portion, a first lateral side extending downward from the top portion along the first wall surface of the roof ditch and a second lateral side extending downward from the top portion along the second wall surface of the roof ditch. The first and second lateral sides include a plurality of longitudinally spaced apart stabilizing projections extending downward from bottom edges of the first and second lateral sides into contact with the recessed support surface of the roof ditch.

Claims (46)

2. The vehicle body structure according to claim 1 , wherein

the top portion of the molding member includes a front section and a rear section that are contoured to extend flush with the vehicle body panel between respective top edges of the first and second wall surfaces.

3. The vehicle body structure according to claim 2 , wherein

the top portion of the molding member includes a mid-section that extends between the front and rear sections, the mid-section having a convex contour as viewed in cross-section that extends above the vehicle body panel between respective top edges of the first and second wall surfaces forming a roof rail protruding from the vehicle body panel.

4. The vehicle body structure according to claim 1 , wherein

the top portion of the molding member includes a section that includes a convex contour as viewed in cross-section that extends above the vehicle body panel between respective top edges of the first and second wall surfaces forming a roof rail protruding from the vehicle body panel.

5. The vehicle body structure according to claim 1 , wherein

the first lateral side includes a longitudinally extending first lip with a first seal member that is disposed along the first lip and in contact with the first wall surface, and

the second lateral side includes a longitudinally extending second lip with a second seal member that is disposed along the second lip and in contact with the second wall surface.

6. The vehicle body structure according to claim 5 , wherein

the stabilizing projections are located below the first and second longitudinally extending lips.

7. The vehicle body structure according to claim 1 , wherein

the roof attachment portions extend downward relative to the top portion between the first and second lateral sides.

8. The vehicle body structure according to claim 7 , wherein

the stabilizing projections extend downward from the first and second lateral sides lower than a lowermost surface the roof attachment portions.

9. The vehicle body structure according to claim 1 , wherein

the stabilizing projections are longitudinally spaced apart from adjacent ones of the roof attachment portions.

10. The vehicle body structure according to claim 1 , wherein

the stabilizing projections extend downward from the first and second lateral sides lower than a lower-most surface the roof attachment portions.

11. The vehicle body structure according to claim 1 , wherein

the stabilizing projections have tapering thicknesses such that upper ends of the stabilizing projections are thicker than lower end of the stabilizing projections.

12. The vehicle body structure according to claim 1 , wherein

the stabilizing projections have tapering thicknesses that conform to lower sections of adjacent ones of the first and second lateral sides.

13. The vehicle body structure according to claim 1 , wherein

the stabilizing projections of the first and second lateral sides are aligned as viewed laterally with respect to a lengthwise direction along the roof ditch.

14. A vehicle body structure comprising:

at least one vehicle body panel including a roof ditch that is defined by a recessed support surface, a first wall surface extending longitudinally along a first side of the recessed support surface and a second wall surface extending longitudinally along a second side of the recessed support surface, with the second wall surface being disposed outboard of the first wall surface; and

an elongated molding member including a plurality of roof attachment portions securing the molding member longitudinally along the roof ditch, the molding member including a top portion, a first lateral side extending downward from the top portion long the first wall surface of the roof ditch and a second lateral side extending downward from the top portion along the second wall surface of the roof ditch, each of the first and second lateral sides includes a plurality of longitudinally spaced apart stabilizing projections extending downward from bottom edges of the first and second lateral sides into contact with the recessed support surface of the roof ditch, the stabilizing projections of the first and second lateral sides are offset from the roof attachment portions as viewed laterally with respect to a lengthwise direction along the roof ditch.

15. A vehicle body structure comprising:

at least one vehicle body panel including a roof ditch that is defined by a recessed support surface, a first wall surface extending longitudinally along a first side of the recessed support surface and a second wall surface extending longitudinally along a second side of the recessed support surface, with the second wall surface being disposed outboard of the first wall surface; and

an elongated molding member including a plurality of roof attachment portions securing the molding member longitudinally along the roof ditch, the molding member including a top portion, a first lateral side extending downward from the top portion along the first wall surface of the roof ditch and a second lateral side extending downward from the top portion along the second wall surface of the roof ditch, each of the first and second lateral sides includes a plurality of longitudinally spaced apart stabilizing projections extending downward from bottom edges of the first and second lateral sides into contact with the recessed support surface of the roof ditch, the stabilizing projections have cushioning members located along bottom surface of the stabilizing projections.
